Till- Wednesday Inge II dandy derby ST OF THE DAY was turned In by Craig Snyder who also took first place in the ports racing class On your mark get set go And that is just what they did Some slow some fast some very fast in the fifth annual Club Soap Box Derby held Sunday on Maple Avenue Trophies provided by area merchants were the rewards for the best times turned In by the young competitors in the afternoon event organized by the Georgetown club Starters Glenn and Steve Lawrence released the cars on the steepest section of the hill to be timed by Chris Hamilton Geoff Walker and Richard Leslie DaleJohnson headed the committee that planned the event for the aver en rants and heir variety of cars For the first time in the history of area soap box racing professional cars were judged in a separate class sports racing These rigs were not built of scrap lumber many of the downhill coasters were but built from kits with special wheels and professional steering and broking systems They are lighter and aerodynamical y superior to many the competitors and warranted a special classification In the Sports classification look the first place trophy donated by Medronlc of Toronto Second placed finisher Joanne Lee received her trophy from Murray Motors with Mike Taylor taking third from Joe Gulf In the seniors class Beth Johnson placed first with a time of seconds For the short course down Maple Avenue Mark Williams Garry McLean and Robert Allen med he op three trophies respectively Junior class winners in eluded Claude Gallant Jm McVeigh Kevin Griffith Craig Lawrence and first place winner Dave Johnson in reverse order of qualification With no real problems plaguing the downhil racers the Award went to Pete Rogers for turning in the slowest time of all com The fastest time and the John Bo ugh ton Jewellers Trophy went to Craig Synder who turned in a second average after the four heats of the event The Barber and Henley Trophy for the best looking car went to Mark Williams and Kevin for Jaws The Best Effort Trophy also went to the driver of the shark shaped car Other trophies were donated by the Dairy Queen Silvers Park Toyota Youngs Pharmacy TV North Hallon ford Beaver Lumber and John Jewellers The cars were adorned with shag am radios political stickers vibrant colours and crazy names but if It wasn t for a little help from dad and the members of the Club many of the entrants would still be sitting in the valley on Maple Avenue waiting to get some power to get home Till- WINNERS OF THE DAY In the Junior class Dave Johnson took first Craig Lawrence Kevin Griffith Jim McVeigh Claude Gallant finished respectively In the Seniors division Beth Johnstone was first with Gary McLean Mark Williams and Robert Allan alio winners Sports racing winners were Craig Snyder first with Joanne Lee Mike Taylor and Karen Wilson also winners Pete Roger won the Hard Luck Trophy for the slowest time of all competitors KFEPING THINGS MOVING were Larry and Neil Young of the GT Motorsport Club who sponsored the soapbox derby Today our advertisement appears in a special page section inserted in this newspaper DONT MISS THE FANTASTIC SPECIALS
