Ontario Outdoors Several seasons By the tlrafl this column comes out next week the Brook Trout and Rainbow Trout seasons will be closed in this area That is not to say there is no more fishing I believe that many of Ontarios sportsmen and women have realized Id the last few years that fishing is available for extended periods of time The trend at one time was when the hunting season opened the fishing rods were hung up and that was It till next Spring Times do change I was fishing for Rainbow Trout on the 1Mb of January this year That the same day that Owen Sound had their snow carnival and we caught Trout With the Coho in the Credit River a Itentlon baa been diverted from the traditional rivers of the Northern Area such as the the Beaver and the Sydenham Mike DeJong of Acton bdng doing real well the River with good catches of Rainbow Trout This week with the Coho Derby sponsored by the Progress Club of Mljwlssauga most everyone has taken to the Credit River At the time of this writing the beat fish a pound Coho caught by 10 year old Ball Much publicity has been given the runs lately and maybe this will effect their standing a sport fish rather than a commercial flah as they are now known I mentioned In past columns the 50 foot gill has moved Into Lake Ontario from Lake Erie This boat la equipped with enough nets to take TONS of Coho Salmon Granted the was planted to boost the com fishing in the Great Lakes but more value la from sports fishing than commercial The fishermen of Ontario have been calling for years for be tier fish stocking programs and when one does come the money boys clean up on it We have to alt by and watch it happening This Is why I have been pounding at everyone I meet that is a fishing enthusiast Join the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters I have membership forms and would only be too pleased to get you signed up Remember the fire chief from Beach that caught the record Rainbow Trout this past season He la pictured with the pound Rainbow Trout in the new catalogue for from Corporation As this fish was caught on one of their Lures they were only too print ttus tine catch THE HERALD Wednesday September Page II Meteors to be the Game of the Year Meteors finished first in the league standings with the Eagles as Tbe Meteors had the experience and skills the Eagles speed and young legs The first game was a classic Meteors pulling ahead In the first naif where Eagles came out threatening in the second half Jack put Eagles back In the game and the questions was could Meteors hang on Hang on they did winning The second game played on Eagles home ground on Halton Road Three was to be to Eagles advantage But It turned out to the opposite Eagles were pressing throughout the first half with their kick and run style of soccer But could not score The Meteors with their skill and experience slowly took control of the game The smaller field allowed them to display tbelr skill with a minimum of energy During this half they scored three unanswered goals Jim Clark Ed and Gord Barclay Mr Irwin Gross of Meteor Foundry Co Ltd was mighty proud of tils team winning both league and cup Mr Gross who is a great supporter of both minor and senior soccer in Georgetown announced a very interesting game for the Meteors to be played at Cedarvale Tuesday Oct pro against a touring teem from Germany Chiemsee from Merchants of the County Mens Fastball league were knocked out of contention for the league title this past week as they dropped their semi final series with two games to one The started out In this semi final series in fine fashion dropping Lowville In Lowville last Tuesday night but lost a heartbreaking 43 decision In Georgetown on Friday that set the stage for Sunday a finale once again In In Tuesday nights game the Merchants pounded out 12 hits to account for their six runs Including a home run by Roy Ingles and were never really threatened by as Bill Tilt limited the opposition to but six hits and two runs while striking out 11 batters In the hitting department for the Merchants on Tuesday night Phil Dobbin went two for four while Gord Tomalty and Ray Ingles each picked up two hits in their five at bats Tilt picked up the win while was charged with the loss In Georgetown on Friday night the Merchants had tbe game in the bag until the sixth inning when a combination of three Merchant errors and four hits allowed visitors to score four times over the lest three innings and leave the field winners The Merchants picked up two runs in fourth inning and a single run In the fifth Inning and almost tied the game in the ninth but a disputed play at home plate went against them With one out and runners on second and third Ray Ingles hit a hard grounder that went through the infield Gene Ingles the runner on third base bad to hesitate In cose an play was made but then out for the plate as the boll ted by The throw to the plate by leftflelder was dropped by the catcher but the umpire ruled that he did have possession long enough to constitute an out The final Merchant batsman Gord Tomalty could only manage a weak grounder to the pitcher and thus the game ended In on Sunday night the Merchants Just couldnt get on track and found themselves on the short end of a count after only three innings bad been played They did recover however limiting Lowville to but two runs through the remaining six innings but the damage bad already been done and the margin was too great for the Merchants to recover Adding to the Merchants woes and certainly not conducive to good ball playing was the weather condition The game was halted twice due to rain and although players on both teams were willing to coll it a night the umpires ruled that tbe game must continue BUI Tilt took the loss for the and although be definitely wasnt In top form be asked to shoulder the total blame as his mates stranded baserunnen and therein tells the tale of the loss Tilt threw a nine hitter issued five walks and struck out three Lowville batters Winning pitcher Jacques set down three Merchants via strikeouts and issued seven walks For the Georgetown Mer chants the fastball campaign has
