citizens gathered for the opening ceremonies at Oaklands Regional Centre for the Mentally Retarded The centre Is a new concept In education and training for the retarded that was until now unavailable In this area Its whole existence reflects the growing Interest In our area in social services and par ticularly the care of the mentally retarded explained D H W Bath executive admlnlatrator for the The project which cost seven million dollars will provide a residence gym swimming pool lounges education areas and most important a warm and friendly atmosphere which training and learning can take place The project began a few years ago as a number of local associations for the mentally retarded approached the Provincial Government for the purchase of the site which was formerly the Ortona Armed Forces barracks In the centre of Oakvllle Design for the complete facility was done by architect Donafd to In corporate modem functional design with the existing building on the site The operations principle of Is the theory of normalisation This means bringing retarded people back into their home communities and creating a dally routine Tor them which is as close as possible to that of everyone else Some of Oaklands new residents will travel to local schools for the trainable retarded operated by the boards of education Others will go to workshops or sheltered Industry situations dally Thr residence will en courage a family situation with room mates common recreation areas and small kitchens where residents can make snacks or do laundry Each housing area is complete with a stove fridge and dish washer for use by the families that will live there Hot meals will be prepared In a large central kitchen and distributed to each of the cottage style houses on the site Df the former barracks Some of the residents may be able to visit neighborhood stores parks and other community affairs with or without supervision The public is also encouraged to share In the programs offered In Oaklands and to visit regularly and mix with the residents Volunteer programs have been established to foster further visitation and par ticipation by the outside community Invitations will be Issued for area residents to make use of the complete facility including the pools and gyms We want to be a part of the community and to be associated as fully as possible with all its ac tivities furthered the executive administrator Anyone wishing to help further In implementation of any aspect of the nor malisation program can contact the centre to arrange meetings with the program directors serving light refreshments The residences can ac commodate up to eight persons each with large nearby playing field paved tennis courts and many trees and shrubs to provide even more of a home atmosphere Oakland residents will help as much as they can with the Internal operations of the centre in the kitchen and working with the gardeners in keeping the grounds at tractive The centre will serve the area of Halton and Peel with a new approach for the mentally retarded Working for the centre from the Georgetown area will be Reverend Peter Barrow who was selected to serve on the Board of Governors after he became aware of the needs of the mentally retarded In this area and organized similar training and education programs In Glasgow before coming to Canada An active member of the North Halton Association for the Mentally Retarded Mr Griffiths also serves with the centre He brings as fur ther qualification experience gained on the Advisory Committee on the Retardation for the
