of playoff contention This year however the A should gain a playoff berth ai they have three starters returning from last years squad Sharon Barclay and Brenda Smith as well at Karen Harrington Kim Worrall Charlene Milton and Sue Alexander who provided strong bench strength Graduating to the Vanity A team from last years Junior are Nancy Phillips Cheryl Gundy Cartwrlght and Yvonne Corbett and they are expected to provide still competition for starting positions A newcomer to both the and Georgetown Is Debbie Kirk who attended High School last year Last year the Junior finished fifth in their league however more than a name change has been added to years team Betty Tamaa who taught last year at Dryden High School and who coached that schools Senior Girls basketball team has taken over as Head Coach and will be assisted by Toni Spina a novice to lie coaching ranks A welcome relief to the new coaches Is the return of five players from last years team Caruso Sandy Chamberlain Heather Clarke Cindy Gardiner and Sharon however these veterans will be Beverly tries by a fine group of basketball Up from the Public School ranks Meredith McLaren and Sharon Gundy head the list of fine prospects but other that will be vying for spots on the team Include Patty Barber Carol Carter Meredith Henley Sylvia Martin Karen Monica Pollock and Carrey The potential Is there for a fine hockey In North America has taken over from soccer as the least known about and in reality least cared about sport availablr In our high schools The fact that it la also played for the main Dart by females hints at possibly the main reason for its lack of limelight Never theless It la a very demanding physical sport and should rank a lot higher than some of the better known games such as volleyball and definitely belongs In the same con ditioning class as basketball for female students Georgetown and District High School has made field hockey available to girls for the past five years under the tutelage of but it Is still regarded as a less than glamorous sport This year the will sport A and Var squads a slightly different alignment from the previous years Junior and Senior teams but as yet no real league has been set up A one day Tournament for the Championship will officially end the field hockey season This tournament will take place at M M Robinson High School In Wed nesday October This year Coach Is planning taking the A Vanity team to a junior Conference tournament to be held under the auspices of the Ontario Field Hockey Association This special tournament will be staged October 101b but as yet no site has been designated In exhibition games last Monday both the A and Varsity teams from tied teams from Robinson VARSITY COACH BETTY TAMAS goes over some plays with team members Although the Varsity B team failed to make the playoffs In their league last year Coach Tamas la expecting that this years season will prove much more successful Some fine rookie prospects up from the Public School system have added much to the teams potential Centennial Cross country run Centennial Public School Sheldon Brown held their annual Cross Andy Carter and Ken Riddle Country Meet this past Linda Ferguson led the field Monday and approximately for the grade seven girls with 800 students male and female Christine Woychesko placing from grade six through grade second Woychesko eight competed The course placing third while fourth and was roughly one mile In length fifth spots went to Maurene and the overall team winner Gale and Heather Reed House 1 Beavers who Leading the pack in the grade accumulated 314 points seven boys run Doug Grade six girls In order of Smith body pursued by Bobby finish Cheryl Thompson Davey Lance Doucette Bob Michelle Richmond Jackie Dean and Dave Finley Wlckena Leslie and copped first Carolyn McCauley For the place honours for the grade grade six boys Mike Doucette eight girls followed by Judy finished tint ahead of Hike cross country The Rebels Cross team Journeyed to Bramptons Centennial High School past week for a meet teams from Centennial High School High School Port Credit High School Britannia High Stfiool and Turner High School demonstrated what hours if hard work and dedication can do as they recordm a resounding victory over other Peel Regional schools Ac coding to team coach Donna Metcalfe the teams pcrfomwnce was the best by a GDHS Cross Country squad In a many years The Rebels captured the top four spots En the Girls Open Division the Midget Boys Division and the Junior Boys while the Senior Boys team although not dominating won their division In Girls Open Division the Rebels took seven of the top eight positions Cathy Clark first Jennie Thompson second Heather third and Kent placed fourth For the Midget Boys in a field of Ian Clark ran to a first place finish John Slack placed second Fergus Barnes was third and John came In fourth In the Junior boys race the Rebels again swept the four finishing positions In order of finish the Rebel runners included Bruce Mclntyre Stevenson Alex Otto and Eric Firth The Senior boys completed the impressive Rebel display against field of as Mike Dixon won the event Alan placed fifth Glen OConnor was seventh and Chris Deere came In ninth This week the team will compete In two Cross Country Meets the fint the East York Harrier meet on Wednesday while on Saturday the Rebels Journey to York University for an important meet SUff competition is expected in both these upcoming meets as It Is expected that the top Cross Country teams from throughout the province of Ontario will be In attendance The fastball scene in Georgetown an end past week when Glen Williams defeated Club Billiards four games to one in the Georgetown Industrial Fastball Leagues championship finals What started out as a close series with the Glen winning the opening contest In ten Innings and Club Billiards taking the second game In 13 Innings proved merely a replay of the Glens regular season successes The Glen won the third contest took the fourth game last Wednesday night then wrapped up the championship with a 40 win on Sunday afternoon For the Glen team its been quite a year They won the regular season title walked off with first place money In two tournaments and emerged victorious In league playoffs Congratulations are due to
