Page THE HERALD Wednesday November Raiders fans the best Standard Products in mild slump raider rap IN THE FREE SKATING CATEGORY at last Mondays Georgetown Figure Skating Clubs Club competition Kirsten left placed second Laura centre finished first and Cyd Sherry placed third Club competitions By Teresa Vermeer Any competing team whether It be in the rink on the court or on the Held Is greatly influenced by fan support There is nothing that can build a team up or deflate a team aster than the back ud and support which fans give The Georgetown Raiders are a good example of a team which is easily swayed by Hie type of fan response available to them On a quiet night their pace Is slowed down almost to the paint of a walk sometimes On a rowdy or more boisterous night they re sparked Into a more exciting pace I believe that fan disap pointment la soon spread as an infection called team frustration whereas a crowd of fans who are impressed and excited act as a remedy or a win potion Strong fan support can urn a game around completely One game that comes to mind Is the Georgetown Oakville game during the playoffs two years ago The Raiders found themselves railing 3 early In the third period They scored one goal and the Tans went wild The chant Go Raiders Go never died down from that moment until the final buzzer and the Raiders came out ahead with a score of If you were to rate fans on a score from one to ten with the high of len you could probably rale the Georgetown fans at a level of Their enthusiasm rates high but I believe they can be overly critical They sometimes forget that everyone has an off day now and Ihen even players This rating Is higher than rating I would give to any other group of fans in the league I rarely miss a road game and other fans in dif ferent locals have left me with definite Impressions some of which are not too impressive In the few fans that do appear at the games par ticipate enthusiastically enough particularly when Ihe opposing team Is beating the hometown boys and the fans try to take the stink out of losing by making ihe visitors look bad Fort Erie fans ore all mouth and none of their verbalizing is too appealing If vou could hear their four- word clauses youd think been Issued a special profanity per In the fan population tends to be fairly sparse and Georgetown fans which Invade rink along with team usually out yell and pa rile pale much more actively than he local fans This could also be said about the fans in except that there a few in dividual will always make an unpleasant dig at every comment the Raider fan moke In Thorold and Port Colbourne the fans are pretty decent theyll usually respect the visiting team as long as the visitors respect the local I really believe that the Georgetown fans have a good reputation as to the quality of their support Their support can always Increase the support as It stands now though is a real mis for the Raider team Town skaters perform weeks league play as they humbled on November IB whipped Guclph on November then eked out a win over November Two quick Georgetown goals early in the first period had reeling and they never really recovered as the Gage crew coasted to the win Oakville put themselves further In the hole by taking foolish penalties possibly caused by frustration and were never really a factor in the game after the first period Part of OakvlUes was caused by the defence Mam and Jonn Barnes who came up with some fine rear guard efforts and got the team out of some awkward spots with their accurate passing Five players had a band in Georgetown scoring and they included Mark Mike Greg Thompson Ed and Bill Taylor The final score was in the Georgetown win over Guelph doesnt really tell the whole as led 32after two periods and appeared headed for win This t sit too well with Ian Reeks who promptly deter mined to set things right and sparked his team to victory Recks counted a hat trick but of more importance scored the tying and winning goals plus first insurance marker His Uncinates also deserve a great deal of credit as Greg Thompson netted two goals and Dave scored once whole assisting on two other counters The other Georgetown goals were scored by Mike and Mark Georgetowns win over again isnt ac curately by the Georgetown led 3 at one point but coasted a bit and allowed to come bock and make a game of It It could have been much tighter too as Georgetown was forced to play for the final six minutes but good penalty killing by Dave Kemshead Greg Thorn pan Mike McMcnemy and Bill Taylor held at bay The names of ihe goal get ters in this game were not available The Georgetown Industrial Hockey League recommenced play this past Sunday after having relinquished Ihe Ice lo figure with a 54 win over Royal Pizza Kings and Sandhill dropped hapless Guelph Clair Sunoco In big game of be morning Max Korea opened the scoring for Norvai at the mark of the first period converting passes from Jack and Bob but this was to prove the total offensive effort of their game as was shutout over the final minutes of play Thomson opened their scoring tbe 1 mark of the as Joe Joy blinked the light while Fred Seagull Hnrrisonmade It2 1 at the mark There was only one marker counted In the final frame and It turned out to be an Insurance goal In the excellently played contest Bob Inglls scored an unassisted effort at 19 13 mark to salt away the win Doug Craig picked up the shutout for Sandhill in their 20 win over Sunoco in a game highlighted more by the Sunoco boys than anything else Sandhill had only nine players dressed but it is quite possible they could have won with less as Sunoco team displayed a totally disorganized brand of hockey The score could easily have been In the double If not for the outstanding work of Ron Osborne in the Sunoco nets Time and again he was left completely defenseless because of sloppy play and he would have been Justified In suing his mates for non- support It was Osbornes work alone that kepi the game close as his aptly demonstrated why they are a last place club Royal Pizza Kings have but three points In league play thus far they severely tested league leaders Total Sports before bowing out Total Sports led 3 1 after minutes of play but the Pizza crew refused to wilt and narrowed the gap to by the end of the second period The third period was scoreless until the 56 mark when Ian Syme with his third goal of the game what turned out to be the winner The Pisa Kings managed to hit the with a goal at the 10 45 mark but then watched helplessly as time ran For Total Sports Ian Syme counted a hat trick while singles were added by Brian James and Dave The King scoring was divided among four players as Dave Andre Nolet Dave
