A THE HERALD December Colin in fair condition We like to thank the many many people who have been calling the Herald expressing their concern for the condition of our sports editor Colin Gibson As of late Sunday night Colin was still in fair condition in Toronto General Hospital He in the Respiratory Care Unit on the Floor Urqhurt Wing Toronto General Hspital His doctors say that he is not allowed to see any visitors for the next week or so until injuries to his chest lungs and eyes are under control In the meantime probably certainly ap preciate any cards or letters Super Flake almost a match for Geminis The Georgetown Gemini and showed a receptive crowd at the Gordon Memorial Arena Saturday night Just what Junior hockey is all about It all about tight hockey fast hockey and yes mother even some of that violence you read all about In the papers And to tap It all off U you happened to be a Georgetown fan you even got a taste of what It like to be winner The once again proved that heir flash in the pan days are long gone Downing the Derby handily the moved into sole possession of third place In the league rankings and applied anything but subtle pressure on second ranked Blades To use an old sports cliche the score doesn tell the real story of the game The real story actually consist of characters 19 minis and Super Flake Streetsvllle Jim Lockhurat Lockhurat was about the only plus on the Derbys side Otherwise the Geminis completely dominated a game that provided the fans on hand with some pretty fair exam pies of how to move the puck around your opponents end courtesy of the Gems It was really only the ex play of that kept the Derbys con within striking distance of the Gems It was also who provided the liveliest show on the ice constanly chattering away with the fans the players and a little too frequently the officials Which nil led one Gemini fan to tag the nickname of Super Flake on Lockhurst who we read Is a product of the Brampton and hockey setup At the other end of the Ice his counterpart Gem goalcr Rick Statistics Up to and including Sunday night action Burlington Oakvllle Georgetown Dixie Brampton Milton GA SCORING LEADERS Mark Lipnlcxy Burlington moving from Total Sports First place was squarely on the line Sunday morning as the Georgetown Industrial Hockey Leagues squad faced off against the Total crew Both teams headed into the game tied for first with eight points each Thompson Construction was also right up there but playing the last Sinclair Sunoco It appeared that they would have the easier time of the battle for first place Behind the twogoal effort of Benny came out the eventual winner thanks to a tolly Both of Heppes goals were counted in the second period following a scoreless opening seesaw affair Hugh Williams set up his first tally and Jim HlUbouse aided on the second Holmes sparked he Total Sports attack early In the third period when he took a pass from Kevin to hit home but the spark couldn build into anything more than advantage of their Sunday outing digging the Sunoco squad a little deeper in the league basement wllh a 31 victory over All Ihe scoring In he game was packed Into the drat minutes of play Ed put the Thompson squad on the scoreboard at the 3 S3 mark on a play from Doug Hilts and Rick Thompson Bob Inglla made it six minutes later on Nerval 7 Thompson Const 7 Sandhill Total Sports 7 Royal Pizza Kings 7 Clalr Sunoco play a beautiful net The long Sunoco tally came at the 14 mark when John McKeen pass onto the stick of Dave Iron who In turn put it between the pipes Any hopes of a Sunoco resurgence ended less than a minute later when Bob Mar added the Thompson marker on a play set up by John Swan and Bruce Lewis And that was all the scoring the fans on hand far the game were going to see Sandhill In he other match Sunday behind the good shutout of Paul CaUon blanked the Royal Kings A tight game was evident In the first period when both teams failed to register any sort of scoring play but then things opened up mid way through the second as Rod Halls from Rick put Sandhill on the board Two minutes later Slokierzski finalized the scoring on a play set up by Marty Jay from Keith Halls This Sunday the Industrial hockey league will be back in full action The big game of the day will take place at when Total Sports attempt to reap revenge and get back into the battle for first They meet first place Thompson Con At 15 and the Pizza Kings take to the Ice and at 11 IS Sandhill and Sunoco face off Leading Scorers Brian Beaumont Tomklnson while not quite as noticeable was doing an equally capable it not better- after all the Gems onJob In manning Georgetown goal He particularly earned coach Paul Robinsons nod to start the game midway through the third period when the had managed to edge then- way to within one goal A bad play at the Georgetown blue line put three Derbys one defenceman away from Tomklnson and when that was drawn out of play that left Just Rick Making a beautiful pokecheck with his stick managed to knock the puck out of immediate However with that and a few other exceptions the big pressure cooker In the game was always boiling away In the Derby s end specially during the first period Doug opened the scoring for the Gems Just over six minutes into the opening frame Taking a pass from Bob Fotheringham and Terry Turner let fire with a shot that any sane man would have been ducking dldn sec It With just 30 seconds left In the first period Doug Barnes got an track for an evening hat would eventually sec him move up a few points on the Most Valuable Gemini ladder thanks to a hat trick The Geminis were Just getting over having a goal called back on them when Barnes got a chance to rack up some revenge Moving from the right side he fired high on a pass set up by Ken Kentner and Kevin Reeks Early in he second period a bad rebound from behind the net caught Gema goalie out of place and Gary Vennor was in the right place at he right time o bang the Derbys first goal of the game home Georgetown Just t pull any further ahead and with just IS seconds left in the middle stanza the Derbys hit once again to make it 32 The first two periods were marked by a number of inane battles between Gems and Derbys the worst outcome of which wan a stick swinging incident that injured a fan more than any of the players By the third period the ploy era however had ob viously got it all out of their systems and returned to their prime concern scoring Down consistently from the the Derbys realized they had to open their play up in the third They did but it back fired somewhat as Gemini players found their way to the net almost wide open A backhand by Barnes from and Bill Allison at mark put the Geminis up by two goals but that spread had a lifespan of Just about two minutes Rick Becker applied the touch that eventually proved to be he winner for the Gems taking a pass from Chris Milne to move slowly in from the right side once again At IB mark Barnes earned his free pair of pants with his third goal of he game This one after all the hard shots that the net minder hod managed to handle made It all look quite easy as Barnes merely moved straight in and Dipped an easy shot over Lockhurst s shoulder With two seconds left to play Stanflcld caught Tomklnson anticipating the buzzer to finalize the score at In total Gems Tomklnson faced shots while stopped 43 The game for the Gems comes this Friday night when they ravel dawn o for an ultra Important match against the Blades Second place In the standings could very well swing on out come of that game The Gems will be back at home the following night for a meeting with the Milton Flyers That game should be interesting If for no other reason that to compare the strategics or the two coaches Gems coach Paul Robinson is a student of Millons newly signed head man Gerry Ingles a well known name in Intermediate hockey circles here In Georgetown Ingles signed this past week to take over the coaching duties of the sagging Milton crew He has coached a number of winning teams from Georgetown including teams on which Robinson has developed his hockey thinking So It going to be a match of student versus teacher Goalmouth action In Saturdays GeminiDerby battle Raiders just cant break that old Dundas jinx That little something extra that the men from the boys the winners from the losers The Georgetown Raiders showed a remarkable lack of that his past week in Intermediate A hockey action Last Tuesday night they showed that they are definitely deserving of the number one status they currently hold in the league standings as they totally out classed third ranked Fort Erie Mavericks 11 1 That game was played in the opposition own rink The Fort Eric squad held a slight manpower advantage and yet the Raiders totally dominated the scoring Now considering that performance you would ex pect that playing before their home town fans an even lower ranked crew and facing a golden opportunity to move up even higher on the leagues ladder the Raiders would come ready and raring to give all they ve got But Friday night the Raiders before their very vocal but equally very disappointed hometown fans let the Dundas Merchants make themselves look lJcc the kings of the Georgetown dropping Georgetown Don let that score fool you If you could only stay for the first two periods you should have asked for twothirds of your ticket back While totally dominating play in a rather nondescript minutes of action the Raiders Tailed to administer the killing touch he scoring play They won the battles but lost the war One good thing about It the Raiders looked good during those first two periods Ob viously however loosing good docsn t win games The hometown crew were losing at the end of two periods The Raiders stlckhandllng was up to par and their forechecking was much more Impressive than he little swipes the Dundas forwards were taking at Raiders So what was the problem The Raiders failed to really apply pressure on the Gerry Rare were the times that Tate signs with Raiders A familiar and very popular to the Raiders following a year hustling style on the left wing face will be returning to the in Senior A ranks with was a bright spot for the ranks of the Georgetown the Whitby Seniors As Raiders during the 197374 Raiders for their next game Doug was signed by the season in Georgetown Doug Tate will be returning Raiders late last week His Pendergast Fournier look good for GDHS This past Saturday Georgetown District High School held a warm up wrestling louma men Most or the schools attending were from Hnlton and Peel with four outside schools participating Including teams from Fergus Grey Highlands from Guelph Centennial from Guelph and John Roes also of Rebel wrestling coach Bob McKay pointed out that the highlight of the day was the bout In which Peter of Georgetown wrestled Bruce Greenslde looked really impressive for his first serious bout of jcar win Another highlight was John and Gavin match Coach McKay pointed out that this he hoi ever seen Pendergast wrestle The team has been practising for approximately three weeks to a month under he leadership of Bob McKay who Is employing the use of four of the team most ex wrestlers Rick Bradley Gavin and John Pen dcrgast as his assistants The boys are doing a super Job and have gained full respect of the whole team Coach McKay also ex pressed high hopes for rookies Craig Slater Ken Lonbro Steve Cropper Joe Ibuii and Frank of whom displayed excellent talent In their opening louma me Bill Lieder who Is wrestling for the first year won all his bouts but one In the 194 lb weight class The bout he lost was to Cox who runnerup in the 0 S A finals last year Coach McKay especially thanks assistant coaches Ray Razor Smith and Mike McMahon without whom the team would not be as well developed as they are The coach would also express gratitude to all he scorers timers runners and special hanks to the Mat Maids The Rebels travel to Smith Falls this weekend to par in a quad meet They will run into stiff cm petition from IheSmith Falls teams as It Is being coached by former Georgetown coach Lew Martin The Senior Rebels basketball earn will be Joining the wrestling team as they will play a few games in Smith Falls In preparation their upcoming season GDHS Junior Rebels second in Acton hoop tourney The GDHS Junior Boys Basketball team hosted plewood Secondary School lost Friday night and provided a sparkling performance as hey downed Apple wood 6053 Paul in a spec la game scoring of the Rebels points Chris Knrolidls was leaping high as he grabbed down rebounds while Danny Fisher was the set up man scoring six assists The Rebels then travelled to Acton Saturday to participate in a tournament which they walked off with second place honours In heir opening games they had no problems disposing of Jamie Lawson was big Run In his game as he hooped 14 baskets for points Chris Karolidis was bouncing under the basket us he collected a whopping 17 rebounds while Danny Fisher set up nine baskets In heir second game he Junior Rebels ployed the Mustangs from Milton and easily handled them Paul Krowchuck tossed in a super effort for he Rebels points gabbing 12 rebounds and stealing the ball six limes Other solid games were played by Danny Usher scoring nine assists and Grady Lenskl who ripped down 11 rebounds 1 1 championship game the came up against a touRh team from Walkerton and were edged out This by far the best game as all players played a terrific game Paul was overwhelming as he scored points and successfully grabbed down 14 reounds Other standout performances were urned in by Danny Fisher who was the thief of the team stealing the ball seven times Chris 15 rebounds and Gradle Lenskl with eight assists Coach Morey Locking was quite Impressed by team a performance and figures the boys will fare well fn Ihe upcoming season Raider forwards Intimidated either Aussem or the defen When it happened he defenders showed an in back down Their tactics and stylo changed in third period Georgetown looked a little less impressive but they never Iheless notched four quick goals within the first six minutes of play In the third However a couple of penalties and a slowing down on the Raiders clearing of their own end put he Raiders out of contention when they really should have been coming on even stronger Give their fans full credit every extra Georgetown goal the screams of Go Raiders Go became louder A goal late in the third with Just seconds remaining placed the Raiders as close to a tie as they were going to come Junior the Raiders ex officio coach as a result of a suspension out in the Raiders November 30 game in put the loss to down Just one of those things The Dundas Jinx has seen the Raiders lose consistently to a team hat has little anything better than the Raiders The man who has been handling he coaching duties for the Raiders has been Reg Benalt normally the man who handles he trainers duties The coach In a crunch has been doing a great Job behind the bench The Howie Meeker Memorial Award for the best played goal of the game Friday night has to go to Nell Cotton with a lot of credit also to Art Webster and Tom Pollonlck who set Cotton up Webster set up Cotton with a perfectly timed pass that arrived on he Dundas blue line Just as Cotton was making his break between two Merchants defence men He skated to the right side of the net and as was finally making his move Cotton flipped the puck into the right high corner Paul led he Raiders scoring with wo shots past a passable also assisted on the Raiders first goal which came on a shot by Webster Craig Simp son and Cotton added other two goals In paint totals Berger led with his three followed by Webster Pat Moloney and Simpson wllh wo Bill Currle Rick and with one each The shots on goal really show the lack of that final Raiders They pep pered 33 while at Keith who has had better days between the Raiders pipes Speaking of better days is a shame that Georgetown fans have exchanged games with that battle last Tuesday fans t have exchanged games with that battle last Tuesday in Fort Erie Yet while winning that game handily II 1 the Raiders lost one point in their standings total An earlier game in he season Fort Erie filed a protest with the concerning a misinterpretation of the rules by the game a referee The ref had assessed a tea- minute penalty to one of the Fort Erie players and the Mavericks had insisted that it should have been only five minutes That penalty proved to be costly as Georgetown notched heir onegoal victory while that man was sitting his Infraction out The executive recently upheld the Fort Erie protest and called for the replaying of the game from the point at which the penalty should have ended Thatamounted to about three minutes which were played Just prior to last Tuesday game This time the Raiders were unable to repeat their lone goal performance and the game finished with a 1 draw thus knocking oft a single point from the Raiders standings Penalties were the key for the Raiders against the Mavericks at seven of Georgetown goals were powerplay efforts The second period was a total farce as Georgetown Jumped from a lead at the end of the first to a lead at he end of the second Pete in the Fort Erie nets could only hock a certain amount from his team mates so he gladly let second string Bosnak take over tor the third period Keith in the Raiders nets played a steady game standing up to a total of 35 shots But penalties did indeed make the difference Had It not been for the shenanigans of Ted Hill the Raiders would had only three penalties but Hill was tagged by the officials for seven penalties including a game misconduct as a result of a fight In the third period with Meanwhile the Mavericks were wearing out the hinges on their penalty gate serving a total of 19 different infractions Including wo game miscon duct to who i even rata being listed on the fort Erie lineup and to With 11 to their credit the Raiders scoring statistics took a beneficial bounce for the better Tom Gilbert led the Georgetown onslaught with two goals and two assists His point total of four was only equalled by Art Webster who assisted In setting up four goals
