Reed discusses conservation with UWC THE HERALD Wednesday December 10 insFag South Pacific THE RAND OF THE LAW HaJ too Regional Police Superintendent Floyd Schwann picks the lucky tickets for the draw held part of the bake sale last Saturday Mr Jeanne Getty standi with the superintendent Ticket winners were Penny of town Kay Anderson of Balllnafad and Wood of Mlsslssauga By Helen Taiiman Julian Reed Liberal poke to the University Womens Club following a pot luck nipper at St Al bans in Glen Williams On the theme of survival Mr Reed was op timistic while recognizing the Declining resources which in turn bring declining standards of living was seen as the moat sing problem Yet there is no need for humanity to regress to the Dark If action is prompt man can surmount the problems and maintain an acceptable standard of living The challenge Reed claimed was to convert from the use of renewable resources to renewable resources Authorities have estimated that man has about ten years left to develop the technologv necessary before shortages become acute Some renewable resources already in use may provide for mana energy requirements on an expanded scale Wind power for example has been in the Netherlands for centuries Last year Canada spent on the development of a wind turbine Solar power another solve heating problems in the future Already it baa been used In a US housing development Last year In Ontario pnt one one experimental solar home The ministry felt that this was too expensive However mass production might be expected to bring down the coat Reed also suggested a method to alleviate some problems with hydro He recommended a plan currently in operation in Northern Ireland There the cost of hydro la on a curve Hydro consumption during peak hours of the day la six times as expensive as it la during slack periods In Ontario a better distribution of the of consumption might reduce some of the need for hydro expansion and reduce Government policy must be directed towards solving the energy crisis The technology to utilize new resources must be developed without delay To wait for the US to do it for us Is to undermine our self suf ficiency and increase our of suffering real privation The Brampton Musical Society will begin for Its second production of the season South Pacific with art or Rod Maxwell and musical director Dale Robertson organizing a of year but dont make Christmas a carelesa time of year leaving your family your home and yourself wide open for fires due to carelessness In the festive season homes are mora susceptible to fires however if a levelheaded attitude la taken and practised te fire is and can be eliminated One of the most dangerous fire traps In your home during the season la the Christmas tree As beautiful as it may be a real tree Is a potential torch Fire Chief Ken Buikema outlined a few pointers to practise whether a real or artificial tree Is decorated In he home Everything will burn its just that some things bum faster than others So it is not really correct when it is said thft artificial trees cannot start on fire However ar tificial tees are safer than real trees because they are less apt to catch on fire But remember that ia not to say that they cannot catch on fire warned the Fire Chief When selecting a real tree try to pick a fresh tree The only guaranteed way In knowing your tree Is really fresh la by cutting your own There is a way which by testing con reassure you slightly whether the tree is two weeks old or two months old Bend one of the needles gently If the needle bends Instead breaking the tree can be termed relatively fresh Should he needle snap it Indicates a dry and brittle state which is not suitable Do not bring the Christmas tree Inside the house until the day it will be decorated Store the tree outdoors until ready for use When it Is time to make a new dlagnal cut at least two inches from the butt before setting the tree up Stand the tree in a container that holds plenty of water Refill the container with water every toy because the dry humidity in moat homes ab sorbs the liquid Where the tree Is placed Is another Important fact to keep In mind Do not place It by any source of heat Heat will dry out the tree making it that much more of a waiting trap Do not place the tree by any doorways passageways windows stairs or any other possible escape routes Do not place the tree by curtains or any such material which could quickly begin to blaze Anchor the tree securely so that it will not easily topple Decorations and ornaments on the tree are just as dangerous if not chosen and placed properly Check last years lights Make sure hat the wires are not frayed nor that the sockets are the least big damaged Replace your lights every three or four year When choosing Christmas lights for inside use use the smallest bulbs possible The smaller the bulb the less amount of heat created Do not use a floodlight to light a real tree inside the house for it tends to dry the tree out ex cessively Use only electric lighting sets that bear the mark of approval When placing the lights on the tree If a real one used do not place light too close to any branch or needle Do not place any other tinsel angel hair etc close to the lights Never leave the lights on when no one is home It only takes a second for that tree or the curtains to ignite Unplug the lights when going to bed and use only is amp fuses on the circuit serving the tree When choosing ornaments and trim buy only the non flammable types and remember to position them as advised Why take un necessary chances Dismantle and remove he tree as soon as it has served Its purpose Fire Chief Buikema believes that he tree should not bo kept In he home any longer than after the first week of January Store the used tree outside until it is picked up or taken away or garbage With Ihe cold weather many homes begin to light their fireplaces once again Before doing so make sure your chimney and fireplace are in clean undamaged condition If artificial logs are being used Chief warns to use only one log at a time Too much heat Is given off when two or more logs are used and the chimney and fireplace are not designed to handle that great amount of heat Real logs can be used two or three at a time however do not overdo the of these logs either Above all make sure the fireplace screen Is good and tight If your fireplace Is in ex cellent condition and the logs are Just smouldering almost out they can be left to burn out themselves while the family goes to bed However the chief warned that when in doubt place the log in a tin garbage can and place outside away from any burnable structures or objects If by chance a fire does break out In your home be prepared Discuss with your family what to do in case there ever Is a Ire Discuss fire exit routes and go through a number of fire drills to make sure everyone is fully aware of the planned procedures 1 a fire does occur gel everyone out of the house as qulkly a poeslble avoid panic Close the doors behind you when lealng the building When everyone la clear of the blaze phone the fire depart ment If somehow you feel capable of fighting the fire yourself a garden hose with a nozzle attached Inside Ihe home is the best weapon Keep fire extinguishers on hand at every level of the home Instruct the members of your family on the proper use of he fire ex tinguisher Remember it Is not the tinsel or the thai are ihe cause of fires it la the people Be careful Use and make your Christmas a happy time of year not one which will be remembered as the one destroyed by fire The men of my department and myself are pleased to report that there were fewer fires this year than last It shows us that people are becoming more safety con scious Through toe Christmas season be extra careful After all our men would like to enjoy Christmas in their homes not battling someone elses home fire This Is our way of wishing a Merry Christmas and a happy firefree New Year wished Fire Chief All ExService Personnel and Their Dependents Are invited to take advantage of a free Legion Service MR J TRAVERSY Wllf Be At CANADIAN closely reviewed two aubmltted tender for uniforms for members of the Georgetown Volunteer Fire Department One bid from a St Catharines firm was per uniform lower than a verbal bid submitted by Henry Stanley who has been sup plying the departments uniforms for many Mr Patterson explained that the St Catharines firm guaranteed that the uniforms would fit and had arranged for a company representative to come to Georgetown to properly fit all the firemen Should the uniform still not fit after It was made it could be returned and proper ad justments would be made at no charge The firm he bad been recommended by a number of other municipalities throughout Ontario Because the uniforms had to meet specified Mr Patterson felt that the savings warranted going out of town Councillor Rubs Miller supported the decision I know that Id certainly go out of town if I was looking for a better price Weve got to be very careful spending taxpayers dollars I could ace buying locally if the price were even close but the difference in tbii case la outstanding Councillor Ernie Questioned whether the price difference was actually SSI to which Mr Patterson noted that after several requests for a bid from the local clothier he had received a verbal bid that was below the St Catharines firms tendered price Holy Cross parents discuss child raising Raising Your Child Today is the theme of a panel
