THE HERALD January I 1876Page Raiders look good outscore opponents It must bo new year for the Raiders They surely squashed doubts thai hod been arising during the Latter part of among their fans that Just possibly our entry In the local Intermediate A league had peaked too soon This past week however such problems as overtime losses at home losing streaks even dlf were all put to rest as victories together notching a total of goals themselves and allowing only one by their opponents The turnabout came v expense of totally humiliated lasl Thursday a drubbing a struggling llle crew who were downed at the Gordon Memorial Arena In Pallet re his as perhaps Ihe league best if and when he psyched into producing the extra effort such honors require Despite the score the squad still peppered shots at the Georgetown nets and some were definitely of the tough to handle Throuh It all held his ground to up with his The win was definitely a morale booster for coach Junior Tlbbetts and the rest of the Raiders who hove suffered some tough blows to their egos these pant few weeks They once again reset ihclr sights on place level they re just short of Intermediate standings being rather hard to come by Raiders executive con only estimate that tliey re son between the first place last they heard Fort Erie Mavericks the third place ditto Port got In on the scoring against wllh Pat Moloney and Art Webster leading the way Webster hit for two goals and two assists while Moloney got his four points setting up other s goals Tom Gilbert hit for two goals plui an assist while Neil Cotton blasted home one goal and two Bill Wheeler and John Boy CO rounded out the Raider scoring with single goals With one assist apiece Dill Currle Ray Peacock and Pete Fen completed the polnl cumulation Raider earned their wild Gems look for more players If you were quick enough to catch a glimpse of coach Paul Robinson heading out of the Gordon Memorial Arena Saturday night you might have mistaken him for a bystander fleeing the scene of an accident or a robbery Because what a fairly full house of local Junior fans had witnessed for three hours Saturday had been discouraging mixture of two thirds robbery and one third accident The Dixie Ventures had been the instisators of both and the the hapless victims suffering a loss at the hands of a not all that great Dixie The only comment that could be dragged out of Robinson as he fled was a blank No comment His after all have had better moments In fact Saturday nights venture was perhaps their worst outing- cither home or away they ve come up with this season Totally powerless from goalie to forwards the Gemlnis could only grit their teeth and promise themselves and their fans better days ahead Manager Bob Tost always on optimistic voice In the crowd even muster a bright note His duties in act were blackened during the past few days by the news that an un Junior C ployeithey had been eyeing for a possible signing prior to the 10 cutoff dote had broken a leg during a recent game Which leaves Tost and the rest of the Gemlnis management on the lookout for two extra players and as of Saturday they have now less than a month to do It The have three extra cards walling to bo signed to bring the team up to lis limit As yet Tost has not any definite players in mind in fact he admits that he doesn even know which of the three squads defense offense or goalie lie going to be shopping far The alternating goalie system crumbled for a good port of Saturday night s game Marling Hick Tomklnson pulled at the 15 minute mark of the first after the Ventures had Saturdays action Geminis face the Dixie Ventures Georgetown skater in Canadian Championship come from a deficit to a draw on one good and two undeserved goals But regular backup goalie Ken proved to be no sharper and after the Dixie visitors had edged ahead late in the opener Tomklnson was sent back onto the host spot for the second and third periods However It t all matter of goal tending that was proving costly The Gems defensive corps normally the steadiest segment of the Gems gome had their and dawns When they were up the Ventures had their troubles crossing the blue line when they were down the Ventures had trouble not scoring The some went for the Gems offensive Their goals were nice ones but there Just weren t enough of them The height of the offense problems getting on the right track come midway through the third Given a full two minutes wllh o two man ad vantage the best the Gems could do was a hard shot off the post rifled by Larry Peterson The game Is going to hove some costly repercussions for both the Gems and the Georgetown Juveniles Joe South the fine Juvenile defenscman the Gems base been making good use of wni taken to hospital after a painful back injury It appeared that he would be out of action for some time The Gems actually pulled a bit of a deception on the good crowd of loud and loyal Fans pulling ahead within the first mlnutei of the gome Seven minutes into the period Doug made a couple of quick moves at the Dixie blue line to keep the puck In play He fired a pass to Bob Fothcringham who ended up making a swan dive Into the Dixie net complete with puck credit for the goal has to go to team Rick Becker who scrambled along the board to come up wllh the puck Spying Allison racing Into the slot from the right side Becker made a beautiful pass right onto his stick After Dixie had come back with two answering goals the Gems pulled ahead once again at the mark on a powerplay goal by Doug Barnes from Dale Miecianlec Becker With Dixie ahead late in the second period Lorry Peterson hit for the Gems final goal a effort set up by Barnes Dixie added their final in touch at 51 mark of the third Their big guns for the night were Miles Forget and Jim Baker with two each Both of those players are new additions to the Ventures lineup The Gems powerplay dif were deflnetly the deciding factor in the loss The Ventures were togged with penalties while the Gems were caught for only 10 yet the Dixie offense managed to the Gems two power play goals With the loss the Gems hold on second place was shaken quite seriously Third place were rejoicing the outcome as they now still retain some hope of moving ahead of the Gems but the team happiest with the out come had to be first place Burlington As Bob Tost commented We had a real victory rather conservatively adding three goals in each of the periods The squad displaying mounting frustration or the score mounted against them became rather chippy finishing the game with total of 13 penalties Raiders were togged with 10 The game was definitely not of regular Intermediate A mi In the lack of finesse shown the rough play and the high score night the Oakville Adanacs arrived in Georgetown and all the rumours that have been floating about the league about their problems proved to be true The are definitely teetering on total collapse Interest In the this year is Oakville has been next to nil The team even had to go out of town to find sponsors Most gomes In the chilly Oak vlllc arena see town spectators out numbering local fans twotoone The Adanac staff too has been suffering having undergone a change In command two weeks ago The morale of the team as a result of all these off ice problems has taken a pretty sharp dive It a bit of a gamble from one game to the next see if the Oakville Intermediates are to have enough plajcrs on hand to ice a team Friday night they arrived In Georgetown with a minimal 13 man unit Including the two goalies They had barely enough to put together one set forward line But giving credit where credit is due the Adanacs who did show up certainly came to play They provided a good accounting of themselves despite being at an obvious disadvantage right from the first They managed to pepper Raider s competent backup goalie Brian finally got a weekend off with shots while Brad Prophet s nit minder had to face shots The Raiders came out storming in the first period to notch five goals and the win but the Adanacs were the ones to hit first Just Just one minute Into the period Ray Chlaholm hit from Kim Grant to give a brief 10 lead From that point on however the game was all Georgetown They answered back with goals during the final part of the first and then coasted during the last two periods adding their sixth with less than three minutes left to play Paul Burger scored twice as did Craig Simpson Pat Maloney and Doug rounded out the goal getting with singles B ill Wheeler drew two assists as did Ray Peacock Single assists were handed to Mike Maloney Art Webster John Boyce Tale and Bill Currle Considering their definite disadvantage in manpower even at full strength tho stuck strictly to playing hockey as did the Raiders Georgetown drew five penalties and the Adanacs seven The Raiders season is drawing steadily closer to its completion Only eight games remain being evenly spill between home and away forts This Friday night for one of the few times this year the Raiders will not be playing home Instead they be on the road to Dundos for a late game there But Raiders fans will still have something to watch this weekend Georgetown has set up an exhibition match against the Flyers reigning champions of the OHA Senior A league That game Is scheduled Tor Sunday night and weekends ago in the Milton Beaver Minor Tournament three consecutive vie lories the local Pee Wees captured the A Minor Pee Wee Championship and all the laurels that go along with It It far from an
