IS THE HERALD Wednesday March 10 1870 Betty Fishers not afraid of tackling the board Brownie Guide news Halonen Prospects of tangling with the Board of Education across the board table week In and weekout doesnt bother Betty Fisher the first an nounced candidate in his years board of education election Shes been waging a battle with the board unofficially now for one year first as a representative of the Con cerned Parents of Georgetown later with the Renaissance Com- and presently with the Halton Educational Action League IHEAL The idea of being the devils advocate on the board hadnt really occurred to her she told the Herald in a weekend Interview Weve already got some trustees who do speak up for the people Bill Jim Clelland and Tony Goodyear are all excellent trustees Mrs Gooble Is quiet but she also lands up when theres an important issue We need more trustees of the calibre of those people During the past Mrs Fisher continued pressure has been subtly put on her to run by many parents and teachers she had met People she said have been turning to her Instead of Georgetowns Incumbent trustee Bodnar to get help in dealing with the board They might as well be calling me as their trustee Communication between parents teachers and the board will be the key block in her campaign platform Its always better to know before something comes up how parents and teachers feel about it Instead of dealing with it strictly as a foregone con elusion She would promote active parent teachers associations In every school to provide her with a large research team of concerned parents and teachers Getting back to the basics Is a second major concern of Mrs Fisher Creativity she added would not however be sacrificed in doing so Children can learn to be creative in whatever they ore doing but I here must also be a constant balance maintained through proper standards The problems presently being experienced by students graduating to colleges and universities without adequate knowledge the basics is no a fault of the teachers Its the fault of the curriculum and the standards eel by the boar d and its the kids who are suffering in the end Mrs Fisher will also con linuc to question the boards reserve fund which Is being used to finance expansion to board9 offices Theyre cutting the budget in which we already hove the lowest cost per pupil rate In the province bo that they tan have money silting in the reserve fund drawing Interest but not being spent on educating our kids What is It for Its like putting money away for a rninv day that never cornea She claimed that there no wu the public can get the specifics on that money Mrs Fisher also colled for putting the consultants hired by the board to develop special programs back Into the classrooms Teachers she sold have encouraged her to run They re getting so frustrated caught in the position that they are in The board she continued has set a very poor master servant tone for lis current negotiations with teachers How can you have relations with a that Is uptight and suspicious everyone North Mrs Fisher slated has been getting the end of the stick when It comes to educational ding She pointed to one example affecting Georgetown District High School they need lo Whenever other plec chances a of equipment Ihe pretty high that incy won i gel a new stove they get a used one Where docs that used one come from Most likely some school in the south All money la being spent In the south she said and all promotions from the south are coming up here Our people ore not being promoted Its
