Description
A black and white photograph of the harbour entrance, photographed looking south past the lighthouse into Lake Ontario. The photograph is faded but it looks like the water level is high, as the land spit on the west side of the harbour entrance seems to be flooded. The book, The Story of Bronte by Philip Brimacombe, Oakville Historical Society & Boston Mills Press, c1976, says that in the early 1940's, the water was high and had almost inundated Bronte Beach. That in 1944, the marsh on the north side was filled in and in 1946, the old wooden piers were replaced with concrete piers.

The lighthouse here is the second one, as the fierce 3 day storm of 1888 had destroyed the first. In about 1950, the substantial wooden lighthouse shown here was replaced by a simple, concrete beacon.
