- Description
- The hand tinted photograph looks across the harbour waterway to the east, showing a fishing schooner by the fishing sheds with the 3 story Bronte Steam Mills in the background, (a grist mill) with its tall smokestack.
The people on the embankment are standing in front of the Triller House Hotel, notable by its cupola. It burned in 1923.
For further information, see also the published book, The Story of Bronte by Philip Brimacombe, Oakville Historical Society & Boston Mills Press, c1976. This book has an excellent map showing the location of Bronte village roads, structures and other topographical information - some still in place, others long gone.
The people on the embankment are standing in front of the Triller House Hotel, notable for its cupola. It burned in 1923. - Notes
- |The stamp is of King Edward VII wearing the Ermine Robes of State.
The postmark is "BRONTE OCO7 10 ONT.".
According to the Branscombe book, by the time of this postcard, fishing boats were more often gas-powered. The heavily populated, industrial and shallow western end of Lake Ontario was becoming less habitable for cold-water varieties of fish, which were moving towards the deeper parts of the Lake to the east. By the 1940's, the industry was almost gone. - Inscriptions
