- Jane Barr and Hugh McLean married in Scotland. Hugh sold the family estate in Lockerbie, St. Mungo's Parish, and they left in September 1920 to settle in the 1 1/2 storey house and farm at 3269 Dundas Street West, Palermo, Trafalgar Township. They had a dairy farm with lambs, swine and poultry. There was also a small apiary on the property. Their daughter, Martha, told of being stung when she was working around the hives and how her mother took her in hand when she heard a wee bit of a cuss word.
At the start of the Great Depression, Hugh also worked for the E.D. Smith Co., the Hamilton maker of jams and jellies. This income helped support the family and Palermo farm. In 1930, Jane died. The 3 youngest children, aged 12 to 17, continued to farm while their father continued to work for E.D. Smith. By 1933, the farm was no longer viable so it was sold and the young people went to live with their older, married siblings. Hugh died in 1949.
Jane and Hugh McLean are buried in the Presbyterian cemetery at Nelson, Nelson Township, south side of Dundas Street between Walker's Line and Hwy. 407, now in Burlington, Ontario.
The second photograph (Click on "Pages" above to select and open it) is of the old house taken in August 2014. The house has heritage features but no running water or insulation so has not been used for many years. During the property ownership by the Piggott family, this house was the home of the farm manager and his family. - Notes
- 3269 Dundas Street West is part of Lots 33 and 34, Concession 1, Township of Trafalgar, now in the Town of Oakville. North side of Dundas, west of Bronte Road. The property includes 3271 Dundas Street and from 1945 to at least 2014, has been called "Lazy Pat Farm". John Wood, Martha's grandson writes: Martha wrote her teachers examination and began her 51 year teaching career with a school in Dungannon. At the time I believe you had to be 16 to teach. Grandma, to the best of my knowledge, told her one and only lie. She was only 14 when she wrote the exam! And such a strong Presbyterian too. - Inscriptions
