Councillors Blair Lancaster and Paul Sharman remained quiet as their colleagues recently took part in a lengthy debate over whether the Regional funding was justified. I cannot support this, said Oakville Councillor Cathy Duddeck. We ask Regional staff to demonstrate fiscal restraint. I think we around this table have to demonstrate some fis- cal restraint. The funding would have sent Lancaster and Sharman to Sweden for a one-week sustainable urban planning tour from Sept. 17 to 24. Following now Burlington Mayor Rick Goldrings return from the study trip in 2009, he gave a much-praised presentation on sustainable devel- opment to councillors. However, during the recent council meeting, some questioned what sustainability initiatives were implemented in Halton as a result of the 2009 trip. Whats been the impact of the last trip? asked Burlington Councillor Marianne Meed Ward. Goldring, who accepted 100 per cent respon- sibility for bringing the request to council, said the experience builds knowledge. I suggest with everything we learn, every- thing we read, every conservation we have were building on our knowledge and understanding of each issue. Goldring put forth a motion to amend the report to allocate funding for one councillor, not two, to attend. It was defeated in an 11-10 vote. During the 2009 tour, Goldring spent six nights in three cities in Sweden. During the week he met with elected officials, including the mayor of Malmo, took in 24 lecture presenta- tions and went on eight tours including visits to sustainable neighbourhoods, advanced waste collection facilities, a wind farm and biogas plant, and a waste-to-energy plant.
