It was for their exemplary contribution to the care and well being of veterans and the remembrance of their sacrifices and achievements. Kristin Courtney, co-owner of Medichair Halton, received the Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation during a special ceremony in Mississauga. After serving, many of Canadas veter- ans have continued to provide outstanding service to their country, their communi- ties and their fellow veterans. "They have truly been nation builders and have earned our undying respect and gratitude, said Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs. It is equally gratifying to see other Canadians volunteer their time and efforts to give back to our veterans. Today, we recognize their hard work and honour them. Courtney wanted to do something tan- gible for veterans, so in 2002, she orga- nized a small veterans appreciation lun- cheon in her Oakville store. Eight veterans attended this first lun- cheon. After that luncheon Courtney held another one and another one. By 2010, close to 1,000 people attended this free luncheon to honour Canadas veterans, which is now held at the Oakville Conference Centre. Among the attendees at the luncheon in 2010, were 400 veterans, 300 guests and caregivers, 160 volunteers, local politi- cians, celebrities including hockey legend Paul Henderson, police and military per- sonnel. Courtney also organized a special trib- ute in 2010 to honour fallen Afghan vet- eran, Trooper Jack Bouthillier from Heast, Ont. Bouthilliers parents were in atten- dance at this special tribute and were extremely moved by the gesture. These luncheons now take Courtney a year to organize and they now include opening ceremonies, a colour party, speeches from dignitaries, wreath layings, special recognitions of military and police personnel, audio/video presentations and more. Each year Courtney rallies support and volunteers from her community to get involved in this special event. From on ice to the links, Toronto Maple Leafs legend and NHL Hockey Hall of Famer Darryl Sittler is no stranger to trading in his skates for golf shoes, and will be doing so on Sept. 14 as host of the third annual Smart*Ass Golf Tournament in support of Screen Colons Canada (SCC). Darryl lost his wife Wendy to a lengthy battle with colon cancer in 2001. The 2011 tournament will be held at Glen Abbey Golf Club (GAGC) with registration at 11 a.m. and shotgun will commence at 1 p.m. The evening will feature a live musical performance by Oakville musician Andrew Cole. GAGC is located at 1333 Dorval Dr. For more information, visit www.smartass- golf.com. For more information on SCC, visit www. screencolons.ca.
