On Thursday, 29-year-old nurse Sarah Claxton was driving home from a clients house when she was waved down by a bystander at the scene of a two-vehicle crash at the corner of Lakeshore Road East and Navy Street. One of the two women involved was sitting on the curb when she arrived, Claxton said. I checked to make sure she was okay, and she said she had a bit of chest pain, she was probably having some form of anxiety attack, even just pain from the seatbelt and whiplash, said Claxton. She looked conscious and talking, and thats all I cared about at the time. The other woman was still in her car and was talking to another bystander who had stopped to help. She didnt want to get out and wanted to talk to her husband, she said. We said You really need to get out of the car, we can move you over to the sidewalk and we will call your husband then, and she said No I really want to talk to my husband, said Claxton. She was in a lot of shock (and) I was just trying to keep her calm while she was trying to get hold of her husband. I looked up and the car was smoking under the hood. I saw the smoke and just knew this could get bad, I needed to get her out of (there), and same with the gentleman that was standing next to me, she added. Claxton then told the woman her car was about to catch fire and she had to leave the vehicle immediately. We knew something was about to happen, so we helped her undo her seatbelt and she said to her husband, Theyre telling me I have to get out of my car, said Claxton. After the womans husband told her to listen to Claxton, she got out and was safely moved to the side of the road. About a minute later, the whole car was engulfed in flames, Claxton said. I dont really even know how the accident even happened, but obviously something leaked because the road caught fire before the car did. Something burst obviously and dripped on the road and that caught fire, said Claxton. Claxton is a home care nurse at Nurse Next Door, and said this was the first such situation that she has ever been in. She just wanted to make sure everyone was safe when she arrived at the scene. I havent been a nurse for very long (and) the only thing that was really going through my head was to get everybody safe, make sure everyone was okay and to keep everybody calm, said Claxton. Even if I had been walking down the street, I would have stopped to help, its in your instinct and you want to help the people in your community. The Oakville Fire Department (OFD) confirmed the incident on Lakeshore Road East and Navy Street on July 21 involving the two vehicles. It had sent two fire trucks in response. It stated that one of the vehicles caught fire at 3:42 p.m., according to witnesses at the scene. The victims were in the care of EMS while firefighters worked on the vehicles. They both ended up going with paramedics and I have no idea what happened to them and I really wish I did, said Claxton. Claxton said she hopes the two women are okay and recover- ing, and it was because of the help from other bystanders that she was able to assist in rescuing the woman from her car before it caught on fire. There were lots of bystanders who helped and they deserve the recognition as well. There was a gentleman who helped me get her out of the car and there were two guys that were getting them water and directing traffic, said Claxton. We really worked as a community to help these people get to safety, (and) I wish I knew their names because they were just as much a hero as anybody. f h b flWoman gets out o car t at urst into ames SUBMITTED PHOTO TRAGEDY AVERTED: A car crash in downtown Oakville led to an act of Good Samaritanism by Oakville nurse Sarah Claxton who got a woman out of a car just before the car burst into flames.
