Submissions were down from last year and we interpret this as great news, said Andrew MacIver, treasurer of the Oakville Arts Council. Many of our previous grant recipients have demonstrated impressive success and are now in a position to sustain themselves without the aid of the cultural grant. Culture in Oakville is thriving. Not-for-profit arts, heritage and cultural groups interested in applying to the Cultural Grants program for 2012 are invited to attend a workshop hosted by the Oakville Arts Council and the Town of Oakville on Wednesday, Aug. 24 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the central branch of the Oakville Public Library, 120 Navy St. To register, visit www. oakvillearts.com. The Cultural Grants program has been funding local arts and culture programs since 1989, having given 42 different cul- tural organizations financial funding over the past 22 years. The man accused of stealing a $19,000 diamond ring from an Oakville Place Mall jewellery store has been arrested, but the diamond is still missing. Andrew Smyth, 37, turned himself in to Hamilton police Saturday morning; just days after Halton police issued a war- rant for his arrest. Smyth was transferred into the custody of Halton police Saturday afternoon and has since been charged with three counts of theft over $5,000. Police said one charge of theft over $5,000 stems from an incident, which took place Tuesday, July 26 when a man entered the Birks Jewellery store at Oakville Place and asked to see a specific grade of diamond. The clerk opened the display case to show the man a particular diamond ring at which point the man grabbed the ring, fled to a waiting vehicle and drove away. An unknown male was in the front pas- senger seat. Police said Smyth was also wanted in connection with a similar jewellery theft in Burlington in which a $10,000 ring was stolen from a Charm Diamond Centre on Monday, July 25. He was also wanted in connection with a Hamilton theft, which took place just a few hours after the Burlington theft, in which a high-end Rolex was stolen. Police report that none of the jewellery stolen in these incidents has been recov- ered.
