Residential placement is an option some families have chosen and that choice is to be respected. Aging parents and the like often have no choice but to turn to residential care. However, for those families who want their loved one to remain at home, there should be encouragement and support to do so. Not only is it more cost-effective for the government and taxpayers, but it is the moral thing to do. No family or parent should be forced to hand over their dependent(s) to the ministry simply to enable that individu- al to gain access to meaningful com- munity programming. Nor should families have to undergo the bureau- cratic nightmare we have been through in an attempt to request funding. It is now understandable why so many fami- lies abandon hope. Continued learning and socializing for these disadvantaged individuals is deserved and paramount to their overall well-being. The recent formation of our Halton Special Needs Family Alliance parent group consists of many talented, knowl- edgeable, committed, and passionate members offering creative and cost-ef- fective solutions in an effort to assist these children long-term. However, as previously indicated, our letter sent directly to the minister weeks ago, remains unanswered. Without the min- ister's support, very little can be accom- plished for these special individuals and their families. We respectfully request immediate address to our family's plight with a speedy resolution to the issues out- lined.
