"Words are not enough to convey how grateful we are for their commitment and dedication. As a national endeavour, I am encouraging local branches to hold appre- ciation events for veterans of the Afghanistan mission this coming August, in order to remember those who have fallen, thank those who have returned and to celebrate how proud you and your families have made us to be Canadian," stated Varga. So the local Legions are picking up the challenge. For more information, contact the Oakville branch 905-845-6271 or www. oakv i l l e l eg ion114 .ca . Inspiration for new songs usually comes in the shower for the 10-year-old, and one such song is being considered by Canadas Walk of Fame for its televised awards show. The E. J. James Public School student is one of the top 10 finalists in the Canadas Walk of Fames A Song for Canada competition that had more than 600 entries nationwide. A portion of the winning piece will be used in a song for the awards show that will air this October. I feel really excited and really happy, the smiley Brenan said. Usually I make up song lyr- ics when Im taking a shower. I first think of a melody and then I start singing random words and then some sentences work out. I was just trying to think of different words about Canada. The contest asked people to describe the true essence of the Canadian identity and what makes them proud to be Canadian in a 250-word poem or essay. People were also encouraged to submit a vocal or musical interpretation with their written content. f d h hA Song or Cana a puts er among t e Top 10 ERIC RIEHL / OAKVILLE BEAVER A SHOWER OF INSPIRATION: Catherine Brenan is one of the Top 10 finalists in Canada's Walk of Fame competition called A Song For Canada.
