after Christmas The path has not been en smooth For example because wood Is so expensive and Bob cut down their own trees last spring Then we discovered that the wood has to be for a year before can use it so we had to buy the wood anyway said All the Items arc mode of Canadian wood It required a certain amount or ex to find out which woods would be best for each ornament In the case of the wine goblets only cherry wood Is suitable But for the other Items such woods as black walnut black cherry birch and elm ore used The goblets are really a prestige item said It takes hours to turn a 4inch square block of wood Into a which sells Tor The wood is placed on the lathe and three cuts arc made Firs the wood is shaped from square to round Then the goblet shape is carved out and then the interior cuts are made Then the goblet muat be sanded finished and waxed with beeswax to protect the It took a while to learn Just how much pressure to use when you re sanding the goblets said The lip Is so think that just a little too much pressure and itll break In your hand Normally they endup with finished goblets out of a batch of Russ said the difference between commercially made wooden ornaments and the work done by Works is the effort put into the finish on the wood He said the finish on their work is much smoother than the finish on mass manufactured Items As a result they have trouble keeping up with the demand for their work particularly with the goblets It takes five hours to put together an electric lamp said that the wood should be kllndricd before it is used but soft wood tends to spilt during the process The lamps sell for We went to the Bay and Simpson and other large stores and compared the price of our lamps with said Our price amounts to about a wholesale price for those stores He added that it Is almost impossible to get a matched set of lamps since every lamp turns out dif ferent One of the problems which affects the number of Items made out of a particular piece of wood is the Invisible flaws which don t show up until after some of the cuts have been made In view some of ihse flaws add interest to the items He pointed out a black walnut lamp with large splits In It and said that some people loved the splits In the lamp and others hated them The Works workshop Is in the upper half of the building which was the original home on the property To get to the workshop visitors must climb a flight of stairs and go through a trap door The workshop which Is relatively smalt contains four lathes In the summer with the windows open you can hear
