Home Newspaper of Halton Hills WEDNESDAY DECEMBER lt7T A Division of Canadian Newspapers Company Limited 103 Main St South Georgetown L7G Ontario VDOKIMOi Publisher BOB BUTTER Editor Second Clait Malt Sacrofice for unity Two recent surveys regarding Quebec independence have mealed and confirmed some startling facts about attitudes both Anglophone and Francophone in this still legally undivided country One survey conducted by the Toronto Star and Southam Press Indicates that support for separation from Canada by Quebec is waning The other by Readers less convincing Polls being what they are do not always provide the definitive answer in questions that in emotion and deeply held ideas But what does emerge from these very detailed investigations and analysis or is that many Canadians hove deeply developed prejudices and misconceptions about each other Confusion distrust are loromon denominators while morale especially in speaking Canada is generally low What disturbs is the depth of bigotry and the arrogant attitude of a mo Jon I of Anglophone Canadians that Quebec should stay in Confederation but on English terms mokes it clear as well that these same tmghsh Canadians are prepared to sacrifice very little to keep Quebec in Canada The survey indicates that are dissatisfied with their lot under the existing constitution yet It points out so are many westerners who wish to see greater provincial autonomy As the University of Toronto s leading literary critic Prof Northrop told a recent unity conference The flowering of regional cultures is to be welcomed rather than resisted Surely we could all make the modest sacrifice necessary to allow our and brothers in Quebec feel that they are equal under the constitution but also equal in the eyes of all Canada as persons who unique and vibrant culture has much to offer the whole country Surely we could sacrifice a modicum of our materialism and apathy and get to work to force our political leaders to change our to accommodate diversity Highly centralized federalism may not be the only form of government But above all we must sacrifice our prejudice That is what we being asked to give up Church off base resolution from Saskatchewan of Ihc tinned Church Id Ihe general last week colled or ibohtion of advertising The lion asked ihe Central Council of church go on record is opposing he proliferation of idvernsing and lis major role in ihe of modii Apart from ihc obvious fact thai the persons who drafted hat resolution are lotdllv of with realilv person wondering whether some minorities ihc churches haw of concern which we believe is the of human spirit There is no nnecfion never between advertising and miners of the spirit One of contentions in the resolution was that advertising costs too much The fact of the is advertising costs consumer or nothing Docs little store on ihe corner sell goods at lower prices because It does no advertising Usually the small operation has to charge a higher price thai his competitor who docs advertise and thus a bigger volume of business The resolution asked that council urge iht government to imiiale a reduction of paid advertising in all media will a view replacing it as chief source of revenue for media The leaves it unclear whether the government should become he chief source revenut or consumer should do so If government is lo provide the moncv one can imagine how long would lake in hue all the media telling things exactly as government wanled them told If on he other hand this newspaper pass on alt its costs its subscribers advertising revenue year newspapers mighi well cost or more In other words the paper would cease lo exist Then take the case of retailer or the The keeper would wall a ling for people to come in and ask about new products styles of or new anything The manufacturer could invest hundreds of thousands of dollars in Ihc design ind production of belter goods and I hey in move so he would be before iln orders started coming In The Iniled Church along all other churches in country is financially depen deal upon the donations of its members Those members hive to be prosperous in ugh to have some money ver r the In one way or another ill of those church members derive incomes from the free flow of trade did business Without the advertising keeps ihe wheels of business turning ihi churches would find themselves in a very All in all ii would be better for diuretics to stick moral issues Miners there is no lack of material inihii area Advance Times Looking through our files i centre in municipal was hiking along the trail His comment set my mind to recalling lime I learned Just how easy it Is to hike some portions of that pathway which winds lis way from Niagara to Tobermory all started as one of those socalled dream assignments conjured now and again in the minds of editors I was to hike with the Army Cadets as hey marched about miles from Dyer Bay near Lions Head on a full weekend expedition What he failed to caution me about was that I had to carry a pack and all the assorted goodies that everyone else lugged along with I hem So thinking assignment a snap I talked somewhat easily about whole episode Jim Allen a good and fellow reporter and and behold he volunteers Jim had another reason It was his birthday on the Sunday and the prospect of sharing a brew in the quiet surroundings of a pub in Tobermory lent lo endeavor Over a period of three days one at the armouries in a day long hike from Dyer Bay to Cypress Lake Provincial Park and then Ihe last day s hike Into the village at lip of the Bruce peninsula would in style I- or the I of us it was nothing short of a Thai Is until we the Georgian Bay section of the trail We wen four miles from the Stirling point whin we slowed down for a young girt who bruised a shin bone on one of those incredibly high like about feel rocks must be scaled every ten feet or so Using land ordinance map and com pass I si irt following our location And starieil becoming confused Either we were looping trails or we wcrcn making much headway Mcinwhik Jim is talking in rapture he and will share that in Tobermory after we reach the provincial park It was far and beyond a better prospect than the hard rations given to us by cadet corps The stand military issue rations have never been very filling and probably feed a squirrel lei alone a hungry man who has walked miles But Ihen started to rain II became overcast The constant hills and the rocky obstacles of Georgian Bay coast begin dark and it was apparent lint wc wouldn make the park by nightfall Only five miles ahead My spoke officer in charge But it would be ermines walk in the dark So we si overnight i lean loonlhctriil Jim I supped on a cold ean of spaghetti and a fe precious iter in our canteens The next morning at first light the campsite was alive with nervous bodies all begin the short march And when walking in the ram both Jim and I were thankful that the aches and pains of sleeping doubled up among so many people soon disappeared miles turned into miles before realized and still the provincial park eluded us Finally as darkness began to descend wc came to he entrance to the park But wasn I until after we had to rig harnesses bring each individual down from a fool ledge We final reached late Sunday night or Monday morning Jim and I wandered ihe newsroom bright and early began Idling our tale of woe A good night rest had brought out all the hi i le pains we hid could result from unused muscles A regular days work followed and we both slept soundly second night back The story and pictures never did make it into he newspaper because neither Jim nor I had the ambition or energy for a week o set into prinl The surprising thing all was thai our editor never once questioned us it I suppose he d seen bedraggled return homo from he wars and belie v ii expedient lo let sleeping dogs lie Too many MPs too but By MacLEOD Ottawa Bureau There is a among federal Liberals to seem overly about future of Canada and confederation to suggest that we are just passing through a constitutional squall with Rene Levesque and that good old Canadian common sense will eventually save us from change Representatives of the central govern are expected lo talk this way Anything less suggests some form of failure But John Reid the MP from Rainy River has never been one of those follow pack types and this has to do wilh the fact he is technically elected as a Liberal Labor member He is a full fledged member of the Liberal caucus and has previously served as a parliamentary secre tary to the government House leader He has frequently been mentioned as a likely cabinet appointee but has never quite made Perhaps he says price for slaying closer to the pack In any event Reid is not among those who thinks the country will simply revert to Its old way of life the moment the Parti is defeated either in a referendum or an election We are going have considerable changes in the way things arc done In this country whether wc like it or he says That process is going be timecon and difficult Reid recently took part in seminar on Canada talking about politics In 1992 and while in ail honesty I am unable to make any sensible prediction to the outcome of ihe debate on national unity he certainly dished out enough food for hough would have been easy have assumed the debate would end wilh no doubts as the integrity of what we call Canada but I remain as one who reads current history Impressed by what smalt determined groups can do to our complex highly organized society Even if all ihe optimists are and Rene a referendum Is soundly defected will be major changes in Canada he predicted The leasl we can expeel arc constitutional changes similar to Ihal Victoria Charter which will serve to decent ra I lie governmental powers make much more difficult for Ottawa provide leadership worst Ihe same referendum results Northern A large portion of Quebec separatists are young people says it is conceivable they accept the status quo We have already had a of this through the events or i9o And happens if the Parti wins referendum The process of dissolving the federation begins Whatever spirit at the beginning he air is unlikely lo be filled with peace and goodwill at the end And if separation was finally he adds is when wc would begin facing he real questions There would be he first question of whether what was left of federation could survive even if we could continue hold Ihc Marlttmcs can you Imagine a federation made up of Ontario and four Western Provinces Quebec to provide the counterbalance in what direction would our relations he S develop Would we be in joining the highly centralized US federation Would hey want us to Join suppose new federation could not hold together The would probably be first to go so they would go o Would the lake them in Perhaps also perhaps Mantlmes would likely become a colony of he US in Could Western Provinces slay British Columbia might want to go it alone perhaps In company with Alberta Saskatchewan and Manitoba would have make a choice they could go with Albcrla or wilh Ontario says it possible lhat all nine English speaking provinces would eventually United States or be picked off as colonics And this would leave the newly Inde pendent Quebec with the difficult choice of becoming a colony of France again or becoming an economic colony of the US being good North Americans and poor Europeans would find this a difficult choice this point one could see a move ment towards recon federal ion as a possibility assuming that provinces hod not entered US federation After all thai is haw came about in he first place safes prediction for a Canadian lo make is there is likely be a conference Message from where By GERRY us lake quick flip around the globe this week with potpourri a tongueincheek look at the happenings of our fellow creatures on this wonderful wacky world we live on First to Southhampton England where the voice of flooded the airwaves of the Independent Southern Television Channels causing mayhem and panic After a series of bleeps a man voice said This is the have be made by Earth people All your weapons of evil must be destroyed You only have a short time learn to live together in peace or leave the galaxy Now If convicted you have lo catch him first our galactic visitor could get a dollar fine under the Wireless Telegraphy Ac The joke is what If it really visitor One investigator said he would really have to know his onions if you know what I mean after all you can go addressing the airwaves unless you have a fair amount of technical knowledge PS If blows up England who is going to pay the fine and where will he pay If Here a mind bender from Kansas City A member of the Hare Krishna sect they preach non violence and love for your fellow man wearing a suit was charged with assault after an incident involving a Salva tion Army bell ringer He told her she was on his moneycollecting spot He was probably mumbling something about Peace sister peace as he pounded the Ion into the sidewalk So much for loving Ihy fellow man Toronto an ad In the Toronto Star read as follows Bear paws and gall for cash The ad was placed by Willy Chow who is trying to locale bear paws and bear gall bladders to sell in Hong Kong According to Chow bear paws great delicacy in China and only the very rich can afford You pay about WOO Cansd tan for four paws In China the best bear paw is placed in whiskey for two years if you drink It you supposedly get stronger stronger Probably he philosophy behind thai is if the bear paw whiskey kill you nothing else can Abilene Texas where we arc about to follow adventures of a little squirrel The curious squirrel discovered an opening in a backyard sewer pipe and followed it indoors o a commode The woman of the house had just from a relaxing hot tub when our dashing explorer popped his head up in the John The woman quickly slammed the lid down You might say the squirrel almost lost his head when he discovered where he was A fireman offered return he wee furry to the great outdoors of backyard the woman objected fearing another impromptu visit Our four footed Christopher Columbus was then transferred and given a new home in an Abilene park Washington where discover that Santa Is considered lo be a man of means with opulent leisure time at least to the ad man fancy at Hallmark cards On Christmas cards Santa is depleted ridingonskls sailing playing tennis and swinging at a golf ball Hallmark cords say the athletic Santa cords are among the most energetic sellers What an energetic seller folks Does that mean something to someone out there in readerland please let me know if you know Oh compete for prizes for attendance of the week prizes are hamburgers yoyos T shirts on The scheme was initialed by school authorities who called on local business people supply the prizes I guess theory here is thai if you give hem prizes go school Ihey won be around to vandalize your shops Next thing you know they will have to give bigger prizes to the teachers come to school o give out the prizes lo the kids who go to school free gifts Dumb Dumb Dumb Editors notebook Drinking mans report Queen Park Bureau In my day have drunk a lot of liquor And I can say reservation thai never once have taken a drink because of a liquor ad Because of liquor advertising know of certain brands I know for example thai Canadian Club is sold around world And 1 readily Identify the brands of beer Ih it advertise regularly Hut there has never been an occasion when I id re id an ad and grabbed for a drink When Affairs Minister Larry Grossman us he has thai he will probably lie culling down on liquor advents principally bowing to a crusading and ill informed People who think it would be a good idea in cm down liquor advertising etsei null ii know Todiy vi tun find people lo favor culling II heir sill importance And liquor of course Ins iHen favorite football Aside from this you come down prattle ilnles Jusi sense doc ike win Mr hi has in mind He says he is thinking of cutting down either size or the number or ads per brand But what will this do There will still be advertising Andall the restrictions would do would be hobble some brands from promoting against heir is key o remember and for Mr Grossman to recognize advertising on national level which liquor is Is pally a brand proposition one point that perhaps has some valldlly is that advertising could encourage drinking by youth because It gives a robe of social acceptance In any case if point has some merit it would be television advertising which is to blame A newspaper or magazine ad almost i tain wo it caused anyone to drink television lis life style type of ad conceivably could If Ihis Is the case Mr Grossman already has Ihe tools control Tin liquor aulhorilies hove to approve tin form Of oil advertising And if after thorough consideration imy that lifestyle advertising Is dangi i ihey can curb it Phone 877 2201
