THE HERALD mi Page Meet the Coaches bantams Jack Gudgeon You wont see my wing- en skating in straight lines up and down their wings says Georgetown DBG Stat ionery Major Bantam ment or Jack Gudgeon I think hat you take the creativity out of hockey when you Intr oduce too many systems to the kids Gudgeon who is in his second year as the coach of the Bantams said hockey Is a game which is full of creativity If you let the kids do their own things The coach does use syste matic plays when his beam has the manpower advant age or is killing a penalty but when its at even strength be has absolutely no special plays Gudgeon actually began his coaching career in the 19676B season when he was the helm of a Pee Wee learn lhat Included Tom For bes Gary Dick Machine nipped 21 Georgetowns Green Ma chine Senior Girls took It on the chin last Saturday when they dropped a game to Kinnettes In a ve ry close game Wendy Travis was the big hero for Shelburne as she blocked shot after shot and limited the Green Machine to one goal Nicole and Mahoney were the shooters for Kinnettes Jenny Smith from Raid replied for Georgetown Mlchele Fisher did double duly in the nets playing for her regular Newfie Bullets formerly the Sweethearts Dean FORMER RAIDER At the same time be was coaching the Pee Wees Gud geon was playing Intermedi ate A hockey with the Georgetown Raiders Also at lhat time I was beginning a family he said So something had to go Gudgeon decided stay with the Raiders for whom he played one more season A few years ago Gudgeon attended a few games in the annual Georgetown Internat ional Bantam Tournament The surrounding even gave Gudgeon the incentive to gel back into coaching He specifically asked for the bantam squad and last year proved to be a very good year for his club as they amassed an excellent record One disappointment for Gudgeon and his team was being eliminated In the sec ond round of the tournament Previous to the beginning of the tourney Gudgeon had said ho expected his club to do well and possibly take a shol at winning it ail I think lhat the tourna ment is one of Ihe most important experiences for the bantam players the coach said Every 14 year old players In Georgetown looks forward to it Gudgeon who played all minor hockey in George town missed tournament by one year The first tourn ey was year Gudgeon turned midget The other important part of Ihe season for Gudgeon and his players is the playdawns So far this year the Banl- ha ve def led Dun das In the opening round and are at present lied a I one game each in the series against Sound In last years play downs his club got passed Owen Sound and were eliminated by Barrie In the third round Id like lo get passed Owen Sound and take anoth er crack at Barrie he said If the Bantams continue to win in I ho play downs here may be a problem when the tournament rolls around in midMarch The rules stale that a learn competing in the playdowns cannot enter any tournaments Gudgeon said have talked the problem over with the execu tive and weve decided to cross thai bridge when we gel to it Gudgeon said he chose to coach the bantams because at that age the youngsters arc teachable and are also able to implement what they hove been taught Ministry of Transport Communications MOTOR VEHICLE LICENSE OFFICE Main St OPEN til deadline Monday to Friday AM 530 Saturday AM 300 PM HOURS FOR MARCH Monday to Friday 5 Saturday 9 AM noon Up until Christmas I work almost exclusively on skat ing In practises Gudgeon said After Christmas I beg in to work on power plays and killing penalties SKATING IMPORTANT The coach said that when It to choosing hi squad skating ability was num ber one criteria In his select ions I think if a kid can skate welt then you can teach him the rest of the skills The bantams have a small club this year Gudgeon said that he would prefer to have a few bigger kids on team We are always the small est of the two teams he said It means lhat we have to do a lot of other things better if we are going to Gudgeon said the fact that he played lot of hockey both as a youngster and an adult has helped him In Ihe coaching I think it Is easier to coach If you have played hockey be said You und erstand the emotions the players are going through and you can sympathize with them Gudgeon Is a teacher at Centennial School Does being a teacher help In being a coach I dont think It gives me an edge he said II helps in that I know most of the kids because I have taught them but thats all He said that anyone who understands kids can be a good coach I think you have to under stand kids and know that you cannot apply the same list of expectations to each of them be said They are all different and each should be treated as an Individual As Tar as winning is con ceroed Gudgeon sees It as being very important but not everything Id be lying if I said I did not think winning is Import ant be said However I think that to teach achieving a set of goals under the team concept is the most Import ant thing hockey offers youngsters Up until Christmas Gudg eon gave each of his players equal Ice time In the OMHA he may go to two lines when the situation warrants it like last weeks Coach of the Week Tom Easterman Gudgeon has three daughters Georgetown Lions Club CITIZEN OF THE YEAR INVESTMENT CERTIFICATES ubK STANDARD TRUST DINNER DANCE Honouring
