Brian of George town is not your average freshman hockey player has had an outs landing rookie season thus far for the Big Red He has been named to the AllStar team five times this season three times as Goalie of the Week and twice as Rookie of the Week He was named the Male Athlete of the Month for January by the Cornell Red Key Society And in less than one season he has establish himself as one of the top goalies in the East The reason for ate success this sea son He has the qualities and skills hat are characteristic of great skills hat typical freshman goalie just supposed to have Brian is the best mental goal lender I vc ever seen including juniors and seniors said Cornell hockey coach Dick Bcrtrand He has amazing technique for a freshman He has the best glove in the East heownsthc crease and he has his team mates confidence He like a quarterback there direct and helping our defense- men Thesethlngsjuslaren supposed to be done by a freshman Hayward has proven his abilities time and again this season He has recorded shu touts against St Lawrence and Vermont Against Dart mouth he made saves in Cornell victory be was spectacular against Boston University making several amazing stops to lead the Big Red to a 51 victory But if you had told Hay ward at the beginning of the season that he would start IB games this season allow 3 goals game compile an save percentage and be a major reason for Cornell record and third place standing in the ECAC he would have thought you were crazy When I came here I was just hoping for a chance to play sold I knew that since twt goalies had graduated last year things would be wide open but I was just hoping for a chance show what I could do I never thought I would have this kind of season While growing up in Georgetown and playing hockey In the Provincial A League had aspirations of playing hockey in the Ivy League But Inter csilngly enough he came to Cornell almost by accident I was all set to go to Princeton last year said but then in the spring the Princeton coach turned me down for another freshman goalie I was really down and I thought I was Curling News The Intermediate men skipped by Mike Mak with Wayne Taylor as Lloyd Trimble second sparing for Rick Eastwood and Al Dean lead travelled lo Sunday lo compete in the visio nal compel ion as District 9 champions They lost heir first game a District 1 rink and went on to play a Niagara Palls rink in what turned out to be their final game as they lied and then lost In an extra end closely fought and exciting game Two Business Girls rinks travelled the Club last week and extremely well Peggy Fischer rink of naron wood Mary Black and MacLarcn won both their games placing f and winning the Tacelle Trophy Karen Henderson s rink of Jean Jane Burrows and Liz MeNeilly won both their games and placed 3rd girl Tuo lades rinks travelled to Acton Saturday comp ete in ihe r Business Girls Spiel Ann Hartford with Lena Burns Mary Ellen Joan Trimble had a split winning one
