will also be considered at the June 19 public meeting I m determined we re going to get this thing going as soon us possible Mayor Pete commented Herald editor No nukes is good news This weekend Hills MPP Julian Reed and I crossed paths but it wasn I at the Summer est activities in Acton ilse was covering that It was at the nuclear power demonstration In front of Queen Park 1 was visiting downtown Toronto with a friend who suggested we drop by the rally at Queen Park that was supporting demonstrators the site of the new Darlington nuclear plant near while was there to on behalf of his Liberal party Ft STIVE It was certainly a with close to people on the lush Queen Park grass basking In I hi noonday sun Live musicians punctuating the many nuclear power speakers added to festive feel of the day The crowd included a broad cross section of young and old including many many young children It obvious that parents of youngsters are well aware that the legacy of nucleir energy is one that their children and their children will be paying the price of is the liberal parly hydro critic so it made sense that he d appear at Saturday rally As the MPP representing Hills and his party longtime hydro critic Heed uslnthelown knowsali too well of the autocratic operating methods used by Ontario Hydro and provincial government Using this as his base Reed attacked both the government and the power corporation for their upon construction of nuclear plant known as Darlington It a name worth remembering because if the government is allowed to construct it Darlington will be the largest nuclear plant in world We In Halton Hills think we have our hands full with the hydro corridor image having the worlds largest nuclear plant on your doorstep And you thought only the people of had to worry about up with special glow in the morning SHOCKING ASPECT One of the most shocking aspects of the Darlington plant is that despite its incredible and therefore potential for destruction Ontario Conservative Premier William Davis has decided lo allow the plant to go the standard environmental hearings Environmental hearings were established by the Tories lo calm conservationists fears thai Ontario Hydro was plunging unthinkingly into a program of nuclear energy Now with the province about lo embark on one of its biggest steps into nuclear power ever the Premier wants lo waive the hearings because he claims any delays in the plant would leave Ontario short of electrical power Thais a hard one to swallow considering recent announcements of Ontario Hydro s huge power surplus The arguments sound all too much like government resistance to an independent study of the hydro corridor through Halton Hills It more likely thai Premier docs not want the of opt and evaluation of nuclear power lhat would lake place at an environmental hearing The 1 teal has blasted Premier for this power surplus and Instancy discuss it In Ihc past and what he did Saturday In his speech Reed discussed his party s long opposition to the Darlington plant and quoted one of his own recent speeches in which he termed plant insane He said Ontario does need another nuclear plant nor should we pursue he Tory policy lhat would see nuclear power become the provinces chief source of energy by the century end Of course I agree Iced when he says we don I need Darlington however when he says we don need another nuclear plant I think we don need any The recently narrowly averted disaster at Three Mile Island in brought home the immediate dangers lhat nuclear power plants present and the seemingly steady of and mishaps at nuclear plants remind us just how close our dance with disaster is when we pursue power This has resulted In many thousands of people Joining nuclear cause and great Hut an serious danger in nuclear energy lhat is not is often discussed is the legacy of radiation our nucleir will leave fulurc generations Nuclear power waste does not breakdown It does not lose significant amounts of its radioactivity for centuries Asa result our scientists arc attempting to deal with the problem by covering the waste in cement burying it by slicking it under water It Is really not a very scientific or effective way of dealing with problem Since it hard enough to try and predict what happens tomorrow its impossible for us to be sure tint once we slash radioactive waste it will remain securely disposed of forever Our nuclear waste could and probably will rear its lethal head hundreds of years from now causing destruction In societies it played no role in its development Itdoesn sound like a very responsible way for us to be dealing with our energy problems Why should our energy crisis become another nuclear crisis SENSE seems that it would make sense if the hundreds of millions of dollars thai are being plugged in Ontario industry alone were used to seriously develop other energy sources like wind and sun that a reasonable safe alternative to nuclear power could be found Of course top ranking Tones like Stephen Roman of mines don own the sun but do own uranium mines a substance necessary for the development of nuclear power So when Norval native Julian Reed says he wants the plant stopped I say three cheers happier hear our speaking out for a wholesale freeze ind of nuclear power in this province The slakes arc just loo high lo gamble with nuclear power EVERYTHING MUST GO ATTENTION ALL J A TICKET PRICES SIZES 4 6x 7s MASTER CHARGE CHARGEX IN THE NEAR FUTURE ITS A SMALL WORLD WILL BE DEALING EXCLUSIVELY WITH SIZES FROM BIRTH TO 6x ITS A
