HERALD Wednesday Jane 13 Page 31 Many raincoats WayJays beats Rock woods for fourth win The Glen Williams Way Jays held off a late rally by to take a victory at home last Tuesday in Intereounty Fastball play The WayJays have had six gomes rained out so tar this year A double header set to go Sunday was scratched because of a downpour Against Rock wood the Glen got on the board first in the bottom of the third when Scott Haines walked and then scored on Glenn Fend ley single got that one back In the fourth after when Jim scored after he had led off the inning with a single BROKE OPEN In the bottom of the fifth the Glen broke the game open by scoring three runs Jackie got things going when he hit a single Scott Haines was then hit by a pitch Dean Hancock and Danny Fields then both hit into fielder choices but they later came around to score when pitcher Jeff Hal helped his own cause by knocking them both in with a double In the bottom of the eighth It appeared the Glen had up the victory when Joe South knocked one out the park to give his team a fifth run However the bats finally came alive in the top of the ninth singled and became home on Albert Kelly a triple Kelly then scored a third run for his team on Wayne single Cricket team gives Guelph test On probably the warmest day of the year Georgetown was fortunate in winning the against Guelph Good fortune quickly changed to bad une quickly changed to bad as both Georgetown opening batsmen were dismissed quickly with only two runs The Guelph bowling was extremely tight and both Neville Samaroo and captain Kumar treated the bowling with respect uolly Ihey increased the score and as he gained confidence Kumar showed some classic hooking along with a beautifully timed straight six Bowling changes were made and the batsmen found no respite as they now faced a good offspinner and a left arm leg spinner who both had the boll turning Humphreys trying out for Marlies With the score at Soma was bowled for howe ver his innings was extreme ly valuable and if he this way should score a lot has happened before the remaining Georgetown bat smen I give Kumar much support and he was left to do nearly all the scoring us tan coming in with six wickets down hit two very nice fours over mid wicket but was bowled trying to make it three in a When the innings closed for Kumar was not out ing completed a very compe tent The wicket played extremely well and should lead to some high If things go well for Bill Humphreys he won t be back as the Herald Georgetown district high school reporter next year Humphreys likes his job at The Herald but he would rather play hockey Humphreys has received an invitation to the Toronto Marlboros camp It will begin In late August Humphreys was an eleven round draft choice of the last year There were 11 goalies at last year camp and Humphreys was the fourth last to go He then Joined Aurora of the tier two Junior A league He spent half the season there When the club first siring goalie from the previous year returned Humphreys was let go Humphreys completed the season as a backup to Peter with the George town Raiders The Batsmen seemed to like the wickel and batted very They treated the bow ling with a let of respect but as soon as a loose ball was delivered it was promptly hit for four Apart from que wis probably the main attribute that demonstrated Very seldom did they hit out which is some thing the Georgetown bats men must learn The score was BO before the first wickcl fell to R us tan Ragkir who immediately bowled he next batsmen first ball He was very unluc not to complete a hattnek as the next batsmen almost played on however that was the only bit of enjoyment Kogon to quarters Christine of the Georgetown Racquet Club went to the quarter finals fo the Toronto and District Open before being ed the who plays Georgetown Racquet Club men steam easily won her first two matches The scores in the first one were and In the second she won and In the third round who is an A ranked worn en s player went up against the tournaments number four seed In a real struggle which saw two of the four games go to extra points lost and At one point in the first game of the match Kogon was leading but saw her opponent come back to take the next nine points There were both professio nals and amateurs compel ing in the tournament There were competitors in all with most of metro best being on hand Kevin Parker went as senior There were two errors in the story on Kevin Parker a finalist for the Ha I Ion Hills Athlete of the Year which appeared in The Herald last week Parker was fourth at the 197B Canadian Figure Skating Championships not fifth Also in the same year Parker although a junior was named a member of the senior team which competed in two events in Europe The committee which chose the Hal ton Hills Athlete of the was not affected by those error Parker finish at the Canadian championships did not qualify as in achievement for this past year and in regard to the second error the committee members had the correct information on Parker when they made the decisions However we regret the errors and offer our apologies to Kevin Parker Georgetown had while baited The team was per haps the most rounded team Georgetown has found to date and it will lake a lot of effort next week when Georgetown again meets Guelph if they are not to have a repeal performance RECRUITING There are probably manv people in the Georgetown area who have played cricket we would like to age you to come out for a practise and get who had pitc hed up to this point gave way to his younger brother Terry with one out in the ninth The younger Ho in preserved his brothers win and earned the save by getting the last two outs Before he left the game Jeff Haines struck out six and allowed six hits with three of them coming in that ninth inning The league held a meeting Monday night to decide how to deal with all the rained out As previously ioned the Glen has had six rainedout and comparative ly speaking they have gotten off lucky Last night the Glen hosted Cambridge They are not to hit the field again unlll next when Oranecvillc comes to town but there is a strong possibility a couple of the rained out games will be made up sometime this The win over Richmond leaves the Way Jays with four wins and one loss record
