Entering public life is not an easy decision to make Certainly any councillor will tell you rewards are few and the criticism and problems many Councillors are subject to the pressures and criticism of a wide spectrum of forces including the public other councillors and yes even the press This said we are a little reluctant to criticize the two candidates in the upcoming by election to fill Actons vacant ward one scat However it is more than a little disappointing to study the platforms of candidates Dave Whiting and Terry Grubbe as explained in last weeks Herald Both candidates are quick to say there are no issues this by election sounding very much like candidates in a student council campaign they tell us personalities and approach will be the deciding factor when Acton residents go to the polls next month We hope not At the very ieast it is ex naive to say that at this juncture in Actons history there are no issues facing the com munity In fact Actonians must make some very critical decisions in the immediate future Probably the biggest question facing the town is whether or not residents want to see the Landawn plaza and a subdivision built in the community Certainly if either a major new shopping plaza or a subdivision are constructed in the community the character of the town will be deeply affected Do Actonians want to see their town grow or would they rather sec the small town community maintained Are they in favor of development but only in the downtown business core or would they rather see Acton com base broadened Do Actonians want the region and the town to spend the money necessary to expand the capacity of the sewage treatment plant to allow further expansion of the town These are just some of the issueb that do exist at a crossroads serious answers to serious questions are needed and it seems neither candidate in the upcoming byelection is prepared to address him or herself to them Based on her statements in last week Herald Mrs Grubbe seems to be planning a Jimmy Carter type campaign She says issues arc negative and would rattier dedicate herself to accentuating the positive aspects of Acton U S president Carter ran his election campaign this way discussing the spirit of the American people But the Americans have woken up recently and realized that once the cam paign smiles of their president disappeared the problems remained Dave Whiting says the election is a question of personalities We think voters are more concerned about concrete policies rather than whether or not a candidate pets his dog or sends Christmas cards to his mother Let hope that as the by election campaign heats up our ward one candidates will direct themselves to the issues that do exist and Acton residents will have a real choice on October 9 Contact Centre worthy of support The North Halton Contact Centre is trouble It seems that because of its necessarily anonymous nature potential volunteers and funding donors have forgotten or are unaware of this areas crisis and information phone service Volunteers at the centre handled 9 phone calls last year a whopping increase over the 1 they handled dunng their first year of operation six years ago Volunteers at the centre handle calls 24 hours a day and their service can range anywhere from counselling a potential suicide to phoning to ensure their good health The centre requires at least volunteers to function around the clock but unfortunately their numbers have dwindled to a figure which may spell the end of 24 hour service unless new volunteers come forward At the same time the centre is short of funding necessary to meet operating expenses such as rent Because contact centre volunteers must remain anonymous it is difficult for the organization to hold fundraising activities such as dances sales and the like The contact centre counts on the Halton Hills community to come forward voluntarily with financial donations to help maintain their vital service Certainly based on the volume of phone calls handled by the centre it seems theirs is a very valuable service If you would like to help out either by volunteering or making a financial donation the centre can be reached Post Office Box Georgetown or by calling 1211 Refugee sponsors appear determined Youve got to hand it to the Hills members of Operation Lifeline theyre a determined crew Operation Lifeline groups in Georgetown and Acton have existed since shortly after the plight of the Vietnamese refugees first made world headlines and local residents are now prepared to help at least 1 families settle in a new life in this area fortunately the federal government has given local group members only sketchy information as to the status of their refugee resettlement efforts Members of the Halton Hills groups still do not know the type of families they will help settle nor do they know when will rnve Although delays are derstandabfe in a project the scale the Vietnamese refugee reset tlement it would seem the federal government could be more helpful to the local sponsors While families have been resettled in other Ontario areas in plenty of time for children to begin their school vear at the same time as local students refugee children settling here will now have the additional difficulty of starting the school year later than their new Canadian mates It would also seem that if the refugits could be in their new homes before the bitter Canadian winter sets in their adjustment process wouli be a little easier The local lifeline members are to be commended for their staying power and we hope the Canadian government will reward them shortly by at least providing some information for Hills refugee sponsors A Indian outburst was just tip of the iceberg Am
