Page THE Fit A LP Wednesday a L Sports Editor Sports and politics do mix The American proposal for an international boycott of the 1980 Moscow Summer Olympics is something more than Just missing a race or a jump It has become an inlcrnallonl political football with he athletes It will affect the ones being kicked around The laces which bind this football together are the principles behind it The original Intention that sport and politics will not mix on the Olympic field have long been tampered with It Is probably only natural that politics be involved since the Games involve different nations around the world And what Is more political than countries today One need only look at what happened in 1936 in Nazi Germany when Hitler ruled the Berlin Games Or more recently when the Taiwan team who for many years represented China were told before Montreal that from on Communist Red China would now be the official team recognized by the Olympic world as representing China They were told to take It or leave It Then there were African countries who boycotted the Montreal Games In 1976 because of the Olympic attitude lo the apartheid situation in South Africa A To say that sport and politics don mix in this day and age is ridiculous naive and the statement a farce They do and that is all here is to It We must then work around them Although it shouldn be he case It is The Olympic Village concept where the competing athletes live cat and sleep together is what the games arc all about Competitions go on around the world in alt other venues of life Business culture space races and even religious groups do battle to prove who they claim is right or best These people don who they tangle with or where or when Why should the Olympics be different That is not to say that I agree with the United Soviet Socialist Republic USSR is doing but to take such a minuscule attack as withdrawing the moneys which would be brought into Russia is like lighting the Towering Inferno with a water pistol Get off this caw Jimmy and continue your other good retaliatory measures and move with Joe Clark to change the site of the Games I have been to the Montreal Olympics the Soviet Union and this week the Canadian Figure Skating Championships in Kitchener I can tell you the level of competition the people participating and the dedication involved far surpass overtones involved They arc personal What needs to happen is that the Games should be stationed in one neutral place in the world such as the original site on Mount Olympus with them open to all comers regardless of political beliefs race religion or creed And no flag bean Everyone will be Judged by his or her own performance at the Games not their countrymen The world situation now is like a chess game being played by the Kings and Queens of the world As in the chess game the people and athletes arc the pawns They arc dispensable in the deadly game The Kings and Queens will be the last ones to go at the end and by that time the game will be all over and worth nothing to the winner The men and women boys and girls athletes who spend from late infancy to their mid lives striving to do something and prove themselves the best as society dictates In this competitive environment deserve lo compare themselves to others on this planet If the businessman can work his butt off and come up with gold why can I an athlete There arc many athletes here in Georgetown who are world class in their chosen sports They deserve the opportunity to belter themselves with better competition and more skillful training Politics is part of sport but the Idea is to use it and control how it works in conjunction with sport Bring the games back to Montreal or Los Angeles or Munich or Mexico but don cancel ihem Soccer preparations
