fast pace Bransch said When Doug Smith was In thlrdspotwitbWmetrestogo in the Junior Boys race the possibility that he might not win crossed the minds of more than a few at the meet He dldn disappoint the Georgetown crowd however and with about metres left he took the lead to the finish- line for his first win day Smith said he was very pleas to have a time under minutes At the mark of the Senior Boys 1500m Jon Lan caster was fourth and Arnold Brake was behind In fifth They used strategy and at the finish Lancaster saw gold and Arnold squeezed passed ano ther runner for the bronze later remarked I could t lift my legs This was probably because of the gruelling steeplechase he ran earlier in the day PERSONAL BEST Liz Ramsay a first year junior set a personal best time and came fifth in a very com pell live Senior Girls In the Midget Girls 3000m event teammates and close friends Susan Kristensen and Lyn made excellent showings placing one two respectively In this same at the the girls tied for first Ex questioned Tennis controversy not over By STEPHEN Herald Staff Writer Attempts by Coun Marilyn Serjeantson to have council propose a ceiling on the amount the town tennis clubs should have to pay for upkeep of courts almost backfired last Tuesday expressed concern at a council meeting aver the proposed charge to be levied by the town recreation department against Gordon Tennis Club to cover court maintenance I m not going to ask council to change the agreement work out between recreation director Tom Shepard and the club mind paying percentage of their dues to the rec deport and agree that userpay is the only way to do but they feel that for maintcn a nee purposes is way out of line and wonder If there shout dn be a celling on what the recreation department re Serjeantson asked Mr Shepard what becomes of any extra money obtained from the tennis clubs but not used in maintenance If there Is any extra money and in some years there Is bound to be then it goes into our general recreation flnan Mr Shepard said Be cause the courts are a relative ly new facility here in town resurfacing for quite some lime but when the need to resurface comes up we will cover the costs out of our recreation budget a surplus sold Most of the people don t there will be no need tor Tball league will fold if no convenor The ball league for five to seven yearold boys and girls which was supposed to have begun this past week is in a state of limbo The 130 registered players arc waiting for someone to step forward and act as convenor Dan president of the Georgetown Baseball Association says that Hit rest the Utile leagues have already started He says that the person taking on the job would be responsible for dividing the players Into the eight teams setting up a schedule and assigning and umpires Coaches and manaflers should be no trouble says Volunteers have already offered their services for those lobs forward So If there is some years you i tennis clubs will see it all come back and more somewhere down the road Coun Miller expressed concern about the new rates Tor the club and if they were the result of the user pay charge the club has to pay The rales were set by the club prior to any discussions on who their fee to the department was to be Mr Shepard maintained They colled a meeting at member Ton Hull house to discuss what the rates to mem of the club would be this and invited me because under the old agreement with my predecessor they needed approval from the recreation director They simply their rates were too low Only after they raised them did any discussion about user pay fees come up NEW RATES New rales for joining the Tennis Club arc for juniors for seniors for couples and for families Coun Miller remarked mat dollars is low Tor a whole summer play I don know of any other sport in town that you only have to pay for he said You certainly pay more for The IKS are front row left to right VTs Dave Kentner and Stan rejected president Bob Hooper Jack Handy Behind are directors Doa Harry Alice Fred Jim Barclay Ralph Fletcher end Paul Campbell Missing are Bryan Day sad Moore baseball or soccer Coun Malthy asked Mr Shepard what the cost would be to resurface tennis courts like the four outside Alcott arena You d be looking at a price of Mr Shepard said Courts generally need resur facing once every six to eight years Well I can see how any one can complain about the user pay fee Coun Maltby said In six years that price will have gone up to at leasl It seems like a heck of a good deal to me If the tennis club wants a ceiling set on what they should pay the town tell Ihem to come to council and I II be happy to recom mend one only It will be higher than the they may be paying this year Mr told council that because the courts belong to the town he town can obtain a community centre grant from the province to cover up to per cent of resurfacing costs At the pre sent time he said Wintario grants are froien so the community grants are all that s available the town If the tennis club had retain ed its autonomy II would not be eligible for the community gronls However if the club operates under the auspices of the recreation department it may apply for grants for any major projects These tennis clubs agree with the user pay philosophy as I said Coun Serjeantson reiterated Everyone knows that the arenas in town don pay the entire maintenance costs The tennis people are only asking for fair shake I think heard just about enough on the tennis clubs Coun Pat Patterson said The clubs in this town stole everything for years until we finally got a recreation director who had the Intestinal fortitude to start making them pay for what they re getting As far as arenas are con cerned we are unfortunately saddled with history Maltby said There has been tremendous advance in that area In the last few years and they will continue to get better Tennis is new and I agree with Pat that people have taken a lot for a long time as far as tennis is concerned Now they 11 have to pay A representative of ihe Brampton Tennis Club told The Herald rates there are for juniors for seniors and or a family The Peel Halton race was similar to the as MncPhail a first year midget stayed by her friend side for the majority of ihe race overtook her towards the end of the race for a Peel Hallon championship Sandra Marclniuk who felt she could have done belter placed third in a tough Junior Girls race was sixth Midget Debbie Newman cap tured silver as she placed second in the Senior Girls and Heather Reed well Lancaster look the lead at the 500m mark of the Senior Boys event With a half hand of about he held that position to the finish line and captured his second gold medal of the day Conditions weren t
