Youth soccer registrations last Saturday topped 300 actually some girls and boys This is very much on a par with previous years Not surprising though was number in the younger age groups with per cent of the girls in squirt and atom The boys followed the same trend This being the first year for the younger girls operating In their own age groups most encouraging Naturally wc look for the coaches and managers to signup and for those who arc new to the game and know very little soccer we are producing our own introductory set of coaching and practise guides These will be available in plenty time for the start of the outdoors Perhaps the club should consider putting on an internal clinic of setting up practices with the assistance of the senior clubs in town Looking at the possible increase in youth registrations brings me to the field time wc have available Should we remain with the same number of fields us last year and before we have a problem folks in fitting everything In the projected programme Ever the optimist expect good news later in the spring As it is Monday night with the Falcons and Wednesday with the Meteors will be will have the addition of Centennial suitably fixed for the younger elements if possible This is budget and finance time at the Council and I trust the members bear In mind that then are kids backed by plus adults in the club Added to these are those connected with the Falcons and Meteors clubs at senior level some 100 plus All taxpayers All voters ind potential voters Indoor this week passed without penalty minutes being assessed with helpful input TO Sandra Came Carleton Colonel By Drive Ottawa Dear Sandra Hope this letter finds you enjoying the moulding of those future Ernest Hemingways As for the oneyear journalism program your responsibilities must delve into other areas besides teaching and I trust they re Interesting You might be Interested that your black sheep student managed to find himself employed In work as a journalist After being chronically disassociated from reality for so long I thought it only right to send along a few words about journalism outside Carleton One classmate offered a fitting goodbye note He said Congratulations I After eight months of wrestling with excess verbiage impossible deadlines and tapeeating machines you have mastered the Journalistic techniques of sensationalism distortion and he inverted pyramid and are now ready to enter the real world The real world is Halton Hills Ontario My early training at school made It easier to adjust to food cravings for deadlines and staying up all he its But the similarity stops there Following sports In the community of Hills is the reality as opposed to textbook training At The Herald our objective Is to provide a service which encourages community input and criticism of tha final product THE SYSTEM WORKS I can give you an example how well the system works It hard to forget my first day on the job A gentleman came to submit a sports report I introduced myself and expressed an interest In talking with him and others about sports news He expressed a concern that we should try and do our best in covering the local hockey team the Georgetown Chrysler Raiders Well within an hour I figured out who the Georgetown Raiders were and their apparent importance to the community Itwasn long before I learned that only across hub of Raider activity and conversation In Kentner Dairy Bar hockey people abound and It was there that I first met the illustrious Dave Kentner the Raider general manager who sometimes reminds me of a nice Harold Ballard Another reality is to watch and admire how a small but dedicated editorial staff can work so well together under the time constraints and pressure of deadlines There is Chris our papers Rossi who very capably covered the Raider and Gemini games in October and developed Innovative formula which assisted me in getting my first start at covering the games Taylor is our hard working features reporter and darkroom specialist who is leaving us his week after three Kara with the newspaper Her experience and keen wit will missed and I ve never been able to repay her Tor the time she spent developing IS Individual head shots of hockey players for the section Paul as managing editor offers the guidance and knowledge of the newspaper and Ihe community to help us all keep on track SOME INTERESTING CHALLENGES The Job as sports editor has some Interesting challenges The first and foremost is to account for the number of sports taking place In Georgetown and taking stock of what percentage can be covered by one reporter In the case of minor hockey coverage here are now over hockey teams In Georgetown This makes weekly comprehensive coverage Impossible However what we con try to do is highlight some Interesting aspects of each league and develop feature stories and the like The University of Western Ontario has a sports Information officer He works as a liaison between the newspaper and the Individual team coaches This man says his primary Job is to highlight the most Interesting sports which are often overlooked by the general public This in a sense is what I see as one of our roles and challenges to balance our coverage and expose less publicized sports to Sports section often support from many and led sources of the best advice and help has come from our own staffers Taylor leaves the Herald next Monday alter three years of covering feature stories as well as the police and fire beats Lori was an Informative source when came to sports but will be missed by the entire paper lor her trail knowledge of the community and her efforts to Improve the Herald heir share of the footlights white maintaining our regular sports coverage OPPORTUNITIES TO SHARE IDEAS One of the tools to facilitate this type of coverage might come from the reblrth of The Herald sports column A column can explore opinions and present feature stories that often would not be suitable In a typical news or sports writeup A journalist can be freed from the restraints of offering nothing but a straight forward presentation of the events in writing a column One of our objectives In the sports department will be lo provide In the future features such as the team of the week and the occasional column when space is available Hopefully there will be opportunities for people in the community to also share their attitudes and ideas under the same format in this section But anyhow the deadline approaches In coming years I might do well to remember the immortal words of my former teacher Sometimes you just gotta go with what you got Two competitions plus carnival end skaters month Members the George town figure Skating Club have had an eventful
