Page SECTION A T1IE HERALD Wednesday April IS 1M1 Mentally handica reach for independence Friends are still needed By CUIUS AAGAARD Herald Staff Writer Can a menially handicap ped adult living independ ently from an institution or special home really be Inte grated with the rest of soci ety if he or she cant under stand what the product labels mean at corner grocery Asked last Wednesday night at meeting in the North Association for the Mentally Retarded INHAMR1 offices on George town Wcsleyan Street Hie question was pondered by about eight prospective volunteers interested In the Associations Be A Friend program Much like Big Brothers or Dig Sisters the Friends program would provide mentally handicap ped adults living on their own people they can turn to to help them cope with an often confusing and perhaps less understanding environ ment than what they were used to under the care of the Association The basic things we do in cur dally life- visiting tho doctor cashing cheques at he bank and shopping can sometimes pose a formidable challenge to the mentally handicapped adult Sara Kraveti protective services worker told the group Even going out for a coffee while no big deal for us it is for hem r Under the program indiv idual volunteers meet regu larly on a onetoone bails with menially handicapped adults Often the visits resolve problems which a retarded person Is having while livinga relatively Inde pendent life For the 16 residents of the Countryside home near Hornby the visits oner Ihe mentally handicap ped a chance lo relate to a person outside he resi dence a staff mem beta Theres a real need at Countryside for someone other than a counsellor to relate to resident ial services director Patti Wilton Everyone needs someone to turn to when were down or have a problem Starting In late May he Be A Friend program will conduct a short of Informs lion sessions to help volunteers handle their new roles Eventually hey will meet with mentally handi capped adults learn about their problems and generally break a Utile Ice While volunteers will assist with the daytoday problems most of us lake for granted they will also learn citizens advocacy keeping a dose eye out for infringements on the rights of the retarded Its different from being a regular volunteer Mrs Wil son said Its much more direct The crux Is on friendship and Ihe kind of things youd do for a friend One of the attractive feat ures about program from Ihe volunteers point of view it its flexibility The Inform ation sessions are meant lo help but theyre not obliga tory lo becoming friend since friendship doesnt re quire much training at all Volunteers and their new friends are carefully chosen to match each others needs and available time If one arrangement doesnt work out another one might Not surprisingly often the greatest problem lies In over coming Initial unwarranted fears about meeting handi capped people Meanwhile Be A Friend program Is still looking for volunteers lo insure its success in Ihe community If youre inter ested contact Barbara Abray 8777703 or Wilson at Classical quintet in Acton The Royal Brass Quintet featuring soloists from Ihe office As students register they can check over the jobs on the board Indicate a preference and spend five to 10 minutes chatting about the prospects with one of the placement officers Further appointments with the officers or with a potenli employer may be necessa ry AJid since many appli cants have had little practice in preparing for an involved job search the centre will periodically
