A night to remember Sports beat Herald Sports Thp awn of Halloa Hills presented their annual banquet last Wednesday 13 where some of the region top athletes were honored The Honor and Recognition awards evening a major purpose in the community it shows our athletes that Ha I Ion Hills and admires their efforts We hac many dedicated athletes in the area who com pet on a provincial level or better One can feel proud to belong to such an active sporting community Rarely a week goes by where athlete from Ho I ton Hills is not competing a provincial level If we look at last stories can be found on Sara fifth ranked member of the an gymnastics team Julie natio nal pin bowling champ John War nock from attending a S college on a scholarship and Bob finishing second in the Masters division of the Ottawa marathon SIANT The Honors and Recognition evening Is oftentimes nil the exposure these athletes receive One parent told me that he appreciated award night such as the Athlete of the Year and the Honors and Recognition evening because often the high school student cannot for their school in some sports and it gives them to be recognized by the low instead However the third annual awards dinner creeps into rational adole scence there seem to be signs thai growing pains ore emerging The fact that some of the 1980fll selection committee members were unsure of various athletes applicability to the criteria should indicate that same new guidelines be set in motion On a personal note I have bias towards the guidelines because I often wondered If it fair to evaluate an athlete effort based on a measuring stick of his her achievement in provincial competition Oftentimes those whose names are not in the footlights but have contributed through coaching teaching organizing sporting events art overlooked by such awards nights It would be nice to sec a special mention section added to the banquet for those who have served the town well but never quite rLached the provincial podium But asking to provide other except those already mentioned in the criteria creates new problems The town is faced with a limited budget In holding the awards banquet should think a dinner formil or the awards makes it necessary to keep the numbers of athletes at the d lo a fairly realistic number The only alternative expanding the list of athletes would be to dispense with dinner thus freeing the money Incurred for a guest speaker or additional medal pins There are a number of old hand athletes who arc so proficient in their sports fields that have been at the awards night for each of the three years Perhaps a special award could be given lo a thrce-tlme- point in favor of expanding the list or awards would facilitate a each year whereby a greater number of new recipients would comple ment the old hand athletes Under this system the Acton Legion would be the only available hall large enough to rent for the My cross town counterpart Robin mentioned the feasibility of joining the Athlete of the year awards with the Honor and Recognition night A combined Athlete Night would add twice the color and excitement and the pooling of funds between the Athlete of the Year and the town would add flexibility as to how the money could be spent However under this proposal the town awards should still be considered the Town Awards presented from the municipal government to our athletes in appreciation for the recognition they have brought the town Because of the town limited budget for the night 1 would like to see more of a cooperative effort between the three local newspapers In promoting and seeking applications for the athletes involved A standard application form similar to that used for the Athlete of the Year awards could be submitted by the newspapers as a community sen Ice free of charge INVOLVtMFNT The selection committee can only benefit through more involvement by the general public and this should be by the newspapers whose staff sit on the committee Those who participate in the sport of which an honored athlete is also involved best knows that persons qua if cations and con rt but ions lo the town Yet on arbitrary line will always have to be drawn to limit the number of athletes attending No written rule can ever completely satisfy the selection commit tee criteria because even the strictest of guidelines can be interpreted differently depending on the people involved we can soy that last Wednesday was a total success and much of the credit has lo go to the Recreation department s Jennifer Linton for her meticulous organization and Mayor Pete Pomeroy for his efforts as Master of Ceremonies Above all to watch many of the athletes accept their awards with immense pride and gratitude was perhaps the most captivating part of he night It was truly a night lo remember for them as it was for us Continued from page 14 Awards SARA is collecting many gymnastics awards after eight years in
