sharpening in Acton Herald Sports or Acton Sabres hockey jackets seem to be in high demand this year There was a when players on the local Junior B hockey club I very enthusiastic about wearing their Sabre colors to oppo sition rinks But ever since the Sabres challenged the Burlington Cougars to a light seven game playoff series last winter people have their eyebrows at the mention I the Acton team Players from the team now wear their Jackets with pride In town arenas with no fear of attracting disrespect glances Burlington hockey fans have a better idea of where the town of Acton is and no doubt they 11 be thinking more about how tostop the Sabre machine for the season It could be harder for Cougars too Although losing six talented veterans this season the Sabres may have softened their loss to the team by having two excellent local Acton hockey players Join the club VKKtHYlSACK Both hockey players could have made the club last year according to coach Jules Wade Vlckery was a right winger for the Corniest College hockey team last year and he has decided to try out or the Sabres this year Todd also played right wing for the Acton Juveniles and he Is a top prospect the coach says The Acton minor hockey system is also starling to provide some excellent pro spects and Jutes has high hopes for players such as Kick Dodds and Paul who could help the Sabres In the near future Mark Duval came out of the Acton minor system and was drafted by the Windsor Spitfires otter last year s season with the Acton Sabres If Duval makes the team it will be another one of the gaps the coach hopes to 111 with a squad of experienced who were mostly rook last season Merchants take tournament lead The Glen Merchants beat Erin twice this past week to take an early lead In their best of five Intercounty quarter finals Tuesday night in the Glen aw the locals rally early in the game to a quick lead over Erin Terry Haines threw a steady game giving up two walks tour hits and striking out by Hatcher Reynolds and Danny Fields Terry pitch and the good defensive play by the Glen players left the final score at 30 With a win under their belt the players travelled to Erin Friday niRhi for what was to be one of the most exciting ball games this area has seen all year A thrilling inning tight played ball game which could have gone to either team fought wit Again Terry Haines was to start on the mound Although having seen a lot or Terry pitching over the past few weeks the Erin players still found It difficult to get on In the top of the sixth Inning Glenn cranked out a double with no one on base And timed a well hit double perfectly scored giving the Glen a 10 lead But Erin has been known never to give up On one hit Erin went ahead 1 Things start getting really Interesting The Glen coaches made a critical decision by Terry and putting In brother Jeff It was perfect timing Terry left the game after nine Erin batters and giving up only two hits Dean Hancock who went Tor started out the top of followed by Les Wilson who did the exact same advancing Han cock second Again an RBI hitting a single bringing Hancock in to score After eight complete innings the score was one chance left in the bottom of the 13th but two quick fly balls had them with two out and nobo dy on Erin third baseman drew a clean hit only to stand at first and watch Jeff strike out the last player of the game Truly an excellent perfor mance by all The Mcr chants hits throughout the game came from Dean Hancock Andy Glenn Us Wilson and Graham Dears ley for Raiders Last week a news from the Ontario Ministry of Culture and Recreation announced that a Wlntarlo grant had been approved to the amount of for the Georgetown Chrysler Raider hockey club The local Intermediate A franchise applied tor the while in during their playoff scries with the northern Intermediate champions The reason for the grant was over the costs of travelling and other expenses associated with running the hockey club to replace Barry and Put Fung who were standout performers for hi Sabres In El hoping to find another strong right winger and a good back up goalie for Wayne McDougat hurt the team he admits I m always looking to Improve our defence but they re pretty experienced Russian says This Is going to be a faster club this season looking for more speed and quickness the coach says IMPORTANT The 13 Acton rink during their tryouts Even when Ice Is avail able the coach will be hold dry land training to year He sees an important need for holding dry land training before the prospect players face off against one another on the ice wants each of the new players to gel to know one another so they will be less Inclined to get chippy on the Ice and hurt someone I want a hockey player not a fighter even though they re all righting or a position says QUICKNESS HELPS As with last year plans to pick his team through a series of ges but the altitude of his new recruits during land training is also taken Into consideration The former coach of the year is looking for skating ability quickness thinking ability and all round mobility In picking his 196182 squad But he adds If I think he can be taught something 11 make him a Sabre The coach will have ice facilities for two and a half weeks In order to pick from some players invited from camp Some Import hockey are coming from Northern
