times Mrs Alleen Douglas spent a wintry noon recently With two 12 yearold boys from St Francis of Ass la I Separ ate School Before offering to walk her home they told Mrs Douglas of their interest in computers while she explained to them what life was like in during the 1920s and 1930s The two young gentle men had naked Mrs Douglas an Historical Society memb er to help them with their local history project about old buildings in Halton Hills Mrs Douglas remem bers when her father Joseph M Moore was the editor of the Georgetown Herald during the I930i She lived In a house her father built on the comer of Charles and Park St major interest of Mrs Douglas SPEAKERS She became a member of the Historical Society four years ago and has attended the many meet where speakers have talked about the rich heritage of Esquesing Each member has a unique interest in history and different reasons for Joining the Historical Society Take for example Elaine the president of the Society She was bom and raised in the area Her grand parents came to from Slmcofl County Intensely Interested in family lineage she is the vicechairman of the Peel Genealogy Society She has traced her family tree back seven generations to a place in Scotland colled the Isle of Mull Most genealogists like detective stories and crossword because there is that thrill of figuring It all out Mrs says SUFFERING Genealogy makes one really appreciate the typo of people who came to the area suffering untold hardships she says Tracing families In con bo a cult chore The first sua was published in Halton in Marriage Is of the Historical Society and his interest in local history has led him to write a book that has recently been for publi cation GOOD AS WHEAT Mr Burnetts book is tentatively called As Good as the Wheat His research has turned up some interesting facts about the Esquesing area This area figured pro minently In the Macken zie Rebellion of he says A number of Scots from the Scotch Block southwest of Stewart town felt a democratic Impulse and travelled to Montgomery Tavern In Toronto he says According to a 1849 agricultural census produced more wheal per acre than any other township In the British North America colonies Mr Burnett says Another interesting his torical fact about the area Is that Stewart town once had the same population as Georgetown but the latter community was picked as a railway stop for the Grand Truck Rail road in the Between and 1910 lost onethird of Its population because farmers bled the soil knowing little about fer tilization and crop rota tion Mr Burnett Elaine Walter Lewis is the reference librarian for the Halton Hills Library as well as serving on the Esquesing Historical So cietys executive He Is chairman of a joint committee at works together with ihe Historical Society In providing reference materials on Hal tons early days While the Society draws on its members to pool their information the library looks beyond the community to Institutions for research help Mr Lewis says Ho would like to see the general public bring in old newspapers to fill In some gaps in the history collection BULK A MEATS Pauls Motto I wont put it on my about our Canadian pioneers for Inspiration Since 1975 a group of dedicated history buffs have met to ensure that Halton Hills residents feel they have a sense of Identity of distinction The current president of the Esquesing Historical Society is Elaine Bertrand Mrs describes her own Interest m history by saying a man who doesn know where ha coming from doesnt know where hes going Teacher Rob Burnett who recently finished a book about our local pioneers says he enjoys history because of what It can tell us today about the past With local historian John McDonald as their first president the Esquesing Historical Society has met regularly The Society has been successful in finding a room for their collection In the Georgetown Library but some of their objectives still havent been reached In addition to more members the Society ia looking for local residents to drop by with old newspapers old pictures voters lists or other historic paraphernalia The Historical Society has a very valuable resource with The Herald donating their volumes from 19201930 says Mr Burnett Because of a fire in the old Herald offices The Herald editions are not available until the year 1916 This means that numerous gaps In George towns history still need to be filled Resldenb who have any information are encouraged to help the Historical Society In these matters A short blurb about their Society says for those wishing to support the Society but not become members the cost Is your knowledge and historical material The reward is the satisfaction of knowing your contribution bas added to our communitys heritage In your opinion QUESTION Why are you Interested In the history of Research librarian and Historical Society director WALTER LEWIS said interested because one of his Jobs at the Georgetown Public Libra is administering the local history collection With a degree In history he said hes written local histories for Kingston Frankfurt and Lakeflcld Its port of the reason why I was hired to do this Job at the library he said One thing I ve never done is the history of Roseneath Ontario- just north of Cobourg- I grew up My family has been there a long time Because Im a histo rian did a university degree in history And because my roots in this area go back to Society member BOB BURNETT said This is a very interesting area culturally and speaking Mr Burnett said his great great grandfather George Leslie was a farmer in the Glen Willi cms area having come from County Tyrone In Ireland in 1819 Mr Burnett finds the Scotch block area of Hills very interesting and President of the sing Historical Society ELAINE said shes loved history all her life Im Inte rested in history In general not only Hills she said I think the preservation of our history is important and Im Interested In this history because this is where I live She said some of her family came back to Hills but Ive always been interest because my grand father John G Hurley used to be a reeve in Georgetown Society member BRUCE said He had a lot to do with the planting of maple trees all around Georgetown like on Queen Street and the park Mr Hurley said his a principal and teacher at Georgetown Chapel Street School His roots also go back to the Kay Knitting Company where the Silver Creek Towers now stand Mr uncle Invented a special knit for children s wear and started the company
