throwing away taxpay ers money Mr Priest ner said pretty upset about it a Joke really Superintendent of schools Gary Grossman said a lab of 30 16bit machines will cost the board They re going to IS and 33 bit computers Ira not convinced why Mr Grossman said They re great for business and Industry but at the present time they have very little application to education They re very powerful machines and very costly to produce The ministry announced It will buy million worth of micro computers for the pro vinces and will spend another million to develop software for the computers With ministry grants the 32bit compu ters would cost the board WOOD Im a Utile ous about it Mr Cross- man said With the machine from my pro fessional background I would think you re going in the wrong direction Although no mention was made by the ministry about maintenance costs Mr Grossman said he assumed ft would be carried wholly by the board If you take the normal 15 per cent maintenance cost again that puts it in favor of the smaller ma chines he said Director of education Wnlly Beevor said a 90- day guarantee Is avail able for the ministry com outers but the board has to pay for He noted the present computer equip ment owned by the board has oneyear free labor Thjs speech by Ihe minister is almost word Tor word the same speech as was said wo years ago trustee Anne Fair field said I called a by the Halton board of education surer I think it will apply to us because our mill rate Is below nine per cent Ron Warren told members of the finance committee Monday night board has calculated an average Increase of 1 per cent in the mill rate It also seems most unlikely other boards will be able to use It he said rhe board is one of the lowest spending boards in relation to ail Ontario boards we qualify for the special grant I dont think others will Mr Warren said He said declining enrol ment is increasing the cost per pupil and for tbe Halton board represents per cent of the increase in per pupil cost Also influencing the per pupil cost increase is the provincial governments wage restraint act of and Many boards have tbe opportunity to benefit from this legbla tlon
