SECTION A THE HERALD April Pago GDHS teacher finds conflicts resolved easier after training youre at logger- beadi with someone and it doesnt look like either you Is going to give In Chris has a method of smoothly re solving the conflict and leaving both of you feel ing the winner The 43year old George town District High School teacher has trained In conflict resolu tion at Human Services Community HSC training that comes In useful In hut chosen profession In traditional ways of solving disagreements you rarely end up with both tides feeling satis fied Usually one person feels the winner because he gets his way and the other the loser because he gives In or both feel theyve lost A teacher for 18 years seven of them teaching science at GDHS It wasnt until three years ago that Mr became Involved in the HSC approach to problem solving WORKS WELL 1 find it works really well In dealing with my colleagues and students Mr Bertelsen said I to yell and scream before and Id dee with the problemkids In front of the class However he found he aint getting at the root of the problem with that method Although he would end up the winner at the time the problem would fester to come up again later on I was using suppress ion methods rather than resolving methods Mr said Now since Ive become aware of what works best I have a lot more people who want to talk to me and of living Its meant less opportunity to communi cate and establish family bonds between husband and wife or parents and children he said One of the first things you should realise that most conflicts come from question before but It was nothing to warrant the response he was given Mr realised he was actually angry with himself because on this occasion Instead of spelling everything out In The really hard part is that you have to put your own feelings aside my classes have been going really well What Is the winwin method of conflict resolu tion espoused by Mr The really hard part Is that you have to put your own feelings and focus entirely on the other persons feelings he said Its hard to do because people get caught up in their own position During an argument theres a need for reflect ive listening and empathy Instead of Just blowing your own horn COMMUNICATION The major problem Is communication Very definitely people dont talk to each other dont find out what the other person Is feeling and do ing Theres a lack of communication about where the other person is at Mr Bertelsen said We get so busy accum ulating material things we dont deal with the human side of life With the economic sit uation necessitating that both partners work to maintain their standard within yourself and have less to do with the other person than with you Mr Bertelsen said If you continually point the finger at yourself youll probably be very success ful at resolving the con flict Mr Bertelsen related an experience he had with a student who min utes before a threeday lab was due to be handed In said that he didnt understand It ANGRY My stomach tightened up My face flushed and I got angry Mr remembered I said How dare you say M minutes before that you dont understand You should have come to me before You sit down In his thinking at the moment the student should have known better and deserved everything he got Including a Mr said Reflecting upon It be realized the student had made a perfectly Innocent question and wasnt rude or Insolent although he was negligent In that he should have asked his the usual format for labs he had tried to sava time and write the information for the students on the blackboard As soon as I realised that I walked dawn to Steve and I told him I wasnt really angry at you but at my self for not having written It up when It should have been he told the sur prised student And added But that doesnt excuse the fact that you waited three days to get clarification This method of trying to solve the conflict by look- your side of the conflict can earn the respect of the other person In this situation Mr dealt with the problem by looking at both sides Although the student was berated in pubtte he was also apolo gized to In public and the relationship between the perform in class after ward with no bitter feel ings left over from the incident whereas for quite a while he would have been resentful and thought I was an ass otherwise You dont get much performance when you end up with that kind of attitude in students Mr said However this method will not work If the other person isnt willing to resolve the conflict If the other person still wants to hold a grudge the prob lem cant be solved theres no magic solution to daily conflicts with others Mr said the basis of conflict resolution Is shov ing personal emotions aside and devoting your self entirely to looking at the situation from the other persons point of view right or wrong Then the chances for the conflict to be re solved with neither one losing face In the process are greater The Human Services Community Is a nonprof it organisation funded by the United Way present ing support courses that help people cope with their human side as Mr Bertelsen will be teach the HSC In ten weeks and anticipates offering the courses In Georgetown soon Teach ers with the Halton board of education will be bear ing his conflict resolution strategy April as part of their professional dev elopment day activities Important for teachers pat aside own anger when they face defiance of in students Georgetown District School teacher Bertelsen said Bat Its the best thing to do Theres usually something at the root of and If teachers try to empathise with the stodent theyll often surprise the student wholl fall apart apologise and open op- Asthma class starts April 9 Starting Saturday April
