Harry Hamilton started taking up the It was only cents a lesson Now 61 the whilehair ed Georgetown District High School music teacher rememb ers starting his music career with the Intact he was only ten when he did his first live radio broadcast on the harmonica Although It was the Depression years and money was scarce for many Canadian families Mr Hamilton dad bought him a small accordion Maybe It was an am bition of his to play him self I dont know how he did it because my dad have much ey Mr Hamilton said shaking his head By the time he was Mr Hamilton was winn Ing medals at the Canad Ian National Exhibition Tor his skill on the accord ion His radio broadcasts continued sporadically being heard on t now for CPRB and the now non existent CFCA By the time be was 15 he was starting to teach at Torontos Mundlnger School of Music Although his parents didnt play any themselves Mr Hamilton said they were musically Inclined In their way There was always lots of singing in the Hamilton home From Scotland originally his parents would have their Scotch friends over every weekend for parties with lots of singing of Scottish tunes Mr Ham said SELFTAUGHT When he turned Mr Hamilton Joined up with the Royal Canadian Air Force and taught himself how to play the trumpet During his three and a half years with the force he did a lot of arranging and performing with the force band he said I didnt have much to do with bands until I Joined the Air Force Mr Hamilton said In the Air Force be was in the concert band the marching band the dance band and a small fivepiece jaw group With them Mr Hamilton said he played across Canada Leaving the forces bands didnt spell the end of Mr Hamiltons music career Ho kept himself in circulation at the big Toronto hotels There was always a- lot of work he The big thing was to become well enough known so you get offers from other bands Mr Hamilton became associated on trumpet with name bands like Art Mailman Hart Kenny Barry Pat Ca Jaekson Bert Latin American Serenade Johnny Lindon and his own group among other smaller bands SINGER He also sang with a number of groups like the Jack Duffy group and the Pat Quintet For eight summers Mr Hamilton played at the Sunday night CFRB Peoples Credit Jeweller concerts at the bandshell in Toronto Fourteen years now teaching at Mr Hamilton said he never wanted to be a music teacher and Just fell into the job enjoying It very much however once he started Even after taking on the leaching Job in Georgetown be kept up his busy schedule of per forming doing a lot of playing on weekends and weeknlghts Actually now that I not playing and am Just teaching I dont know howIdldltMr Hamilton I go home now and Im tired I dont want to do it any more although It was tough at the beginn ing when I was told to stop Five yean ago Mr Hamilton learned tie has multiple sclerosis and was advised to stop play ing Although he cant play anymore because of the pain it triggers Mr Hamilton still keeps Mm self active In the music world DIRECTOR This past year be sides the school I musical director of the College Band at the University of Toronto and musical director of the Stage Band he said Mr Hamilton is spend ing more time directing and arranging since he hasnt been able to play I think bands are com back For a long while here big bands were cut down to small groups Mr Hamilton said Look at the Rob McConnell Band Ihe Spitfire Band there a quite an interest in the community in big bands Despite the high inter est In bands with over 12 members money poses a problem It a expensive Its very expensive Mr Hamilton said Its a mailer of economics A lot of bonds shrank to smaller groups because they couldnt afford lo keep being a big band BULK Georgetown District High School teacher and local for lift efforts To the editor of The Herald Congratulations lo our high school students In their effort to raise money for an elevator at the school The elevator will help wheelchair people go about the school with ease It Is quite refreshing to witness this generous gesture on Ihe part of the student body Back In the sixties tboso of us In school affairs saw and heard student protests even rebellion against long standing arbitrary discipline We now that those protests were growing pains The performance of todays student warrants hearty approval I urge all citizens and especially former achcol board members and officials to respond generously to this worthy appeal for donations The Optimist Club of Georgetown and the school student body are cooperating to raise Government grant cover
