Letters to the Editor Armenians say thanks for reunion help To the editor of The Herald The recent anni versary picnic and mini on of the Georgetown Armenian Boys at Cedar- vale Pork was on out standing success thanks to several factors First of all there was the courtesy and co operation of Ms Eva Carney of the Recreation and Parks Department who made needed fa ell 111 available and who sacrificed her own time to conduct for us a sent mental tour through the main buildings Then there was the superb location of grounds of green grass lushevergreensfor shade and buildings and facilities in excellent condition We are highly pleased and proud too that our former home and grounds are so well maintained Several elder citizens of Georgetown came looking for one or more of the Armenian orphan lads whom they had befriend sixty years ago We listened with rapt attention as he praised the Georgetown Boys for the long hard struggles they had endured to establish themselves and become good citizens of Canada Everyone appreciated the little evergreen motif memento pins of Halton Kills and Mr Carney was kept busy passing them out not only to the former tenants or Cedar vale but also to their children and grand children Later on out on the picnic grounds Reverend Sarmazian of the Armenian Evangelical Church of Toronto in on Inspiring address of evan fervour spoke of The Georgetown Boys as true heroes or Canada who hod shown that by overcoming great one could reach the With all this heady praise and some of the tastiest picnic food In Canada It was truly a wonderful reunion for the remembered For them as lor us It was a sentimental trip to Cedarvale There was sadness too as we spoke to them and had to say Oh He died twelve years ago The highlight of our day was the inspiring speech by Councillor Phil Carney representing the Mayor of Georgetown He spoke to us In a large room we remember as classroom and dormitory but which is now a gym thank again all those The following was submitted to The Herald tor publics children in pornography and excessive violence in the media ore Intolerable have been working for teg station to curtail this Mr Reed s suggestion of a list or specific offending elements In the Criminal Code is an old one al ready rejected by the Justice Dcpl Community standards arc static they change A I s such as Mr Reed recommends could there fore be too restrictive at one lime and not 1 enough at In order change the list to match current community standards laws would have to be changed which as all know could take years Traditionally the courts have interpreted undue exploitation according to feedback From society Such terms must remain to leave room for this and to allow for change What Mr suggests is far more restrictive than what we already have Mr Reed also charges lhat the Ontario Censor Board Is hypocritical In culling sexually explicit scenes white allowing hose at extreme viol The OCB enacts law it does not make Reed make taws A person with Mr Reed influence would seem lo have ample opp ortunity to press for to alleviate this hypocritical situation It Is unfortunate that Mr Reed was not among Georgetown rcsi dents mostly men at the showing of cuts taken from current films Extreme cold violence torture and child abuse Most of those present could watch the clipp ings in their entirety All of I heir comments were in support or the O B Perhaps Mr Reed nerds to be updated on current trends In the media and their effects on those who watch them then Youra truly Citizens Against Violent Pornography Gall Rutherford Chairman Pornography has changed To the editor of The Herald I would like to respond to Jul an Reeds letter o the editor as it appeared on July 1983 Mr Reed wrote lhat he first spoke out on the subject of pornography in 1979 and thai his have not changed since thin Had Mr Reed been present at a recent show of edited clips at the no Censor Board he would realize lhat porn has changed dramatically since 1979 We saw murder mutil at Ion violence degrada lion horror and incest with children Many of us were and mentally shak en for days In addition Freedom of Choice from Mr Heeds viewpoint would condone the degradation of human beings espec women It would condone the viewing of women being chained and raped It would condone Ihe view ing of individuals women as sexual objects being used and abused In my opinion del degradation of any human being Is not a matter of free choice Yours truly Barbara Johnson A sens weight loss program that works Lose weight
