career Friday night was a fitting way Tor Kennedy to end four years of being a Georgetown Gemini Central Ontario Junior B League veteran was named the Gcmlnls Most Valuable Player at the team awards banquet The dinner and dance event was held at the Georgetown Leg on Kennedy said he was not expecting the award and added it was a good thing he did not have to make a speech You get up there and your heart is pounding he said It was excellent Looking back the captain said his high and low points with the team came In the same year The year being 1982 83 when the Gcmin met Derbies In the league final The high point was beating and Burllngtontogettotheflnal he said Those two teams might have been better on paper but we got there because we had the heart The low point I guess was when Strectsvllle beat us by something 17 or 17 3 It was hard being humiliated by Street The Derbies ended up winning the final in four straight games Another painful memory for Kennedy came the next season when an optimist crew looking to repeat their feat of the previous year lost out to Mimlco in the first round of the Is always an honor to hold the on any club I did not find It diffi cult being the team captain because this team was young had the respect of the player and I respected them We should have gone to the final and won he said We had the talent and almost the exact team of the year before But like the year before when we had the heart that year had Ihe heart We had the talent but they had more heart and desire When a player Is in his final year of el gibllity It Is natural for him to want to go out a winner and Kennedy admits he was no different Oh yeah everyone wants to win a championship and it was hard playing for a team that was not as strong as the team two years ago but you adjust to it It seems like when a player is In his last year he says he would like to go out a winner and he tries to go wherever he can But I been well treated here and I will always be supportive of the Gemmis organization he said This season Kennedy became the team captain midway through the year He said he did not feel any extra pressure at having to be the leader on the ice on any club I did not find it difficult being the team captain because this team was young and I had Ihe respect of the players and I respected them too After last years fourth place finish the Gemlnls finished eighth and met Colts in the opening round Although the Gemims lost the series the team and executive take pride in being able to say their series was probably the toughest one the eventual league champions had to play Everyone seems to be looking forward to the upcoming year a year that will see Kennedy uncharacteristically out of a Gems uniform Of course I feel bad about having to leave with having been there for so long and being on the ice four times a week I will miss It but you have to go on Beaumont nets six points in win Brian Beaumont had two goals and four named Sabres By DAN RALPH Herald Sports Editor ACTON The new Acton Junior franchise will keep the same name the town had when a Junior Hockey League existed here The new executive elected to keep the team name Sabres at a meeting held Thursday night at the Acton Legion There had been a few suggestions to change name to Tanners but a move would have resulted In loss of the team s incorporation The incorporation came when former Sabres president Frank took over the Junior team five years ago Incorporation meant the new executive then would not be personally responsible for any debts the hockey club incurred In order keep the Incorporation intact the official team name not be changed from what it was registered which was Acton Sabres Hockey Club At the last meeting March It was said if the team name changed and the Junior executive wanted to incorporate the new team name it would have to reapply to the province That would cost about WOO it was sold at the meeting Club president Ed Thomson and viceprcsl dent Bruce Cargill looked Into the issue and Cargill sa d it would cost the new team to reapply for incorporation but not as much as was stated at he lost meeting it would be However said money was not the only reason for keeping the Sabres name The impression we got talking with people and the sponsors is that they like the name said The executive Is currently out trying to get sponsors to buy Individual sweaters as well as space In their programs The Issue of through will be dealt with further at the next meeting slated for at the Acton Legla THEHOTTEST SELLING
