When firefighters finish Acton couple helps homeless A salute to those who give It makes you learn about living ByDAVEROWNEY Staff What did it take for Frits to become an Acton Red Cross volunteer Henry Kroes the pastpresident of the Acton branch twisted his arm said Mr Hann I grinning Mr wanted to start an Acton Branch and he needed a bookkeeper Mr de Harm remembers I started In 1981 when Acton got their charter as a treasurer and after that I was vicechairman of emergency response until last Mr Is now president of the branch and is serving his second term He began working as a volunteer Red Cross Marker in giving blood at clinics and helping to canvass Foremost in your mind is trying to help those with difficulty he said Along with his wife Mary who has been an active Red Cross helper the couple feel there are rewords to be gained from their volunteer work We figured we had some free time and we wanted to help as much as we could Mr Hann said It gives you a great feeling if someones had a fire and you can help them out with bedding and clothing Mr de Hann said One of the Red Cross functions is to aid the homeless when there is a fire During the actual lire volunteers from the Red Cross along with the Salvation Army provide support to the firefighters and victims For example two years ago when a fire raged on In downtown Acton the Red Cross provided coffee and the Salvation Army had snacks available Sometimes we get calls If after the fire heres a need for lodging or blankets he said Always in need of more volunteers to lessen the workload the Acton Red Cross is active with a variety of projects and services They supply a loan cupboard for medical supplies such as wheelchairs crutches and other equipment Through the winter season euchre is run for the seniors Mr de admits thai not much money Is made but it provides a service to the community An executive member probably puts in about hours per month helping the lion while as president Mr Hann figures he spends about hours per week on his duties The only satisfaction is you know youve helped other people and thats that he said KELLY WILSON Herald Special Karen Ferguson has learned a about living since she helped found the North Elalton Hospice four years ago The North Hos pice is a community volunteer service which provides support for the terminally III and their families Mrs Ferguson saw the need for such an organi zation a nurse in a general hospital I could toe that this was a stressful time for pat and their families she said The professional staff didnt as much time listen to patients and heir families as was needed according to Mrs Ferguson Frits and his wire Mary have a long record of volunteerlsm serving the A el on community with the Red Cross Theyre always Childrens Aid Socicly was looking for support in establishing a volunteer auxiliary She was an active member of the steering committee and served on the first executive as corresponding secretary of the CAS volunteer auxiliary that was created in 1971 Mrs Cocks and her husband became Involved in a unique project in utilizing adoptive parents to homes couples also Interesting in adopting They provided support and direction during and after placement of the child Over the years she and her husband Bert have placed children including several children special needs Centennial Manor has a job for you Young at heart with toy library By KELLY WILSON Herald Special If liking toys means you havent grown up yet hen Audrey Hill man is still a youngster at Icatt at heart Mrs one of the founders of the Hills Toy Library has always been interested in toys Maybe I havent grown up yet she said when describing her fascination with Mrs Hillman says she gets satisfaction from seeing something which started as nothing develop Into a smooth running organization I like to organize things she said Mrs Hillman along with her husband and children is a 12 year resident of Hills As well as volunteer ing for the toy library Mrs volunteers for the North Association for the Men tally Retarded and Is the superintendent of Sun day School at St Johns United Church AUDREY The four year old toy library lends high quality educational toys to both handicapped and handicapped children The library located at George Kennedy Public School has toys which it lends out to its members There Is a waiting list for membership but there Is always openings for children for special needs The greatest number or vacancies arc in September The library which serves children from up to years old and handicapped children up to 12 years old is open during the school year except on holidays The hours are Tuesday from to 5 p Wednesday from 1115 m and Thursday from to m The membership fee is MO for one child and 15 for a family membership Volunteering at the toy library is a cooperative effort with all volunteers helping out when they can in mending the toys and as librarians The volunteers work every other week on five month schedule Mrs Ferguson investi gated the hospice at Royal Vicloria Hospital in Montreal and asked herself how could we a community offer some of those supports Mrs Ferguson finds volunteering for the hospice very rewarding stating that Its a privi lege being able to support these patients and families You can Ministry kicks off volunteer activities Over Toronto volunteers who
