Goacre farm it is nice to have a convenient method of transportation However on this day Hugh Graham is having problems For some reason his golf cart want to run smell smoke he says I guess well have to walk A member of the Canadian World Cup equestrian jumping team the past two years Graham has been employed at Hillcrest Farm the past eight and a half years As well as running the farm Graham arranges training schedules tor the 30 horses present Some are owned by while others come from clients Amanda Salter here gives a little tender loving care Abraxus has Just been out for a little ride jumping In 1972 At the time Day was on the Canadian national team It was under Day that Graham purchased his first horse Spot Check and won his first jumping event at the Royal Winter Fair Show both in 1973 The Royal show is the culmination of he competitive season and those riders who attend do so alter accumulating points during shows held earlier in the season Graham also competes in shows that give top competitors points toward making the Canadian team for the World Cup There the top 40 riders in the world compete for global honors As well as representing Canada in the past two World Cups Graham hat been on the national team that won the silver medal at Ihe Pan Am Games in 1983 as well as riding with the Canadian team that finished fourth in the Olympic Games In Los Angeles However Graham did not come into show jumping initially He spent his high school years refining his technique in calf roping When was living on my parents farm in someone moved in next door I would go over there to do miscellaneous tasks in order to ride There were some guys there involved in Western and they got me involved But a keen love for horses got Graham interested in show jumping When he made the decision to pursue equestrian event he had to devote a lol of and energy to perfecting his chosen venue Nooncwaa it over tome to go and get it Now that he has been involved In jumping since 72 Graham said he really t miss calf roping too much I guess I might miss It if I had time to think about It but really don have the time he said One of the ongoing aspects of Graham job is the search for the perfect horse However when Graham goes looking to buy a horse he does it a little differently than a racing enthusiast who buys his horse before ever seeing it run Rather he Judges the colt potential on who its parents are Buying a horse is always a gamble Normally I would buy three four or Hugh Graham aboard Note here clears a Jump wlih relative Take Note Is one of many young potential when I find it When Graham looks over his career and its vast accomplishments he admits he might have to soon think about setting up different future goals Graham said not totally eliminate the possibility of becoming Involved a horse racing in five to id years In fact he took somewhat of a step In that direction this past winter Graham purchased a twoyearold and the horse will enter Kinghaven Farm Ihe largest racehorse training facility in Canada this summer and the training sessions go well it is conceivable the horse could be running this fall or winter I could soy I cant complain about Jumping accomplishments and life direction Graham said But there is always more you can always do better I would like to someday build my own farm and be a little bit more oriented towards my future When one watches calf roping or horse jumping on television the person feels the horse does all the work However Graham disagrees As well as having a good horse in calf roping you have to rope the calf which takes some skill In Jumping the horse does less than SO per cent of the work The rider has to do things like getting the horse to the best Jumping point There is a lot of handeye coordination Graham also added there are times when a horse becomes a little hard to handle on the course That requires the rider touse his strength to keep his horse under control throughout the routine If It was easy and everyone could do it I guess there would be a lot of people doing it he said North Halton tennis tourney North Halton Golf and Country Club was the site for the club
