THE October IMS Halton Hills Council ByGRETCHENDAY Herald Special At the beginning of October the town council approved in principle the development of an Arts Policy for the Town of Halton Hilla Similar policies have already been established in many cities such as Toronto Scarborough Brampton and with Miulsuuga North York Hamilton Oakville and having done considerable work towards the same goal But for a town of our with our diversified makeup to achieve such a policy would be a first in Ontario not to mention Canada and thus set a precedent for similar communities to follow suit If asked Im sure that the running In the next election would say tbey support the Arts But I wonder if they could define the word Unlike sports activities that have certain equipment and faculties rules of age and sex and specific seasons In which they operate the arts activities encompass everything from the visual and performing arts to arts and crafts literature historical studies architec ture and aesthetics in general All are year round activities with few If any age restrictions or sexual discrimination and with a wide varie ty of requirements for equipment and faculties A policy blueprlng guideline to ensure viable growth and support of artistic resources in Hills Is essential But to set out short and long term aims and objectives operating procedures distribution of capital and operating expenditures establishment and augmentation of grants on a per capita basis and more will be no mean feat Therefore it Is Important that those for whom you vote on November be knowledgeable about the needs of our cultural community They must not only be willing to listen but be willing to learn about the arts issues and act upon the policy On the other hand our council members bands are tied if we the public do not inform them via the Arts Policy Committee of what is needed All arts groups and individuals both amateur and professional business people and Interested citizens abroad cross section of the community have a responsibility in developing this cultural awareness Ultimately by working closely together the politicians the staff and the public will create a strong workable lasting Arts Policy for Hills ARTISTIC NOTES Get into the Christmas spirit by attending the Credit Valley Artisans Annual Christinas Sale Nov 10 a m at The Cottage in Cedarvate Park
