Rebels take Halton title By DAN RALPH Herald Sports Editor Now no one can question whether the Georgetown District High School Junior girls team Is the best squad In Halloo Region The Rebels defeated Tuesday in the Halton final played at the Georgetown gym The win gave Rebels coach Moe and his troops a definite answer to the Who Is the best question I convinced now we re the best team said after the win We knew we were good but t sure Just bow good Tuesday a win typified the Rebels entire season The triumph came the direct result of outstanding defence All year it has been our defence said We have six defensive formations and if we can find the right one In the flow of a game we re tough After a tight quarter Georgetown the Rebels defensive domination became evident In the next three Alison Irvine and Jerry Melville came through vrithsoudretoundinata their own end Tara Burroughs with forward Cindy Murnagnan got the fait break going Also a halfcourt trap caused problems for the visitors Yet even with a 2313 lead Leeklng had a problem as Burroughs had three fouls The Rebel ball handler picked up her fourth late in the third quarter which meant Grade 9 player Jenny Irwin assumed a guard position Irwin played through to the fourth quarter when Burroughs came back Into the lineup and finished the game waa pleased with Irwin a play Shorthanded Raiders edged 32 by Hornets Jenny did a good job defensively and in the nine minutes of court time only had one turnover That a pretty good for a Grade player in a final As well as good defence the Rebels had balanced scoring as Jenny Melville had 13 points Burroughs added and Irvine chipped In with Coaching the girls team was a first for coaching the Junior team after longtime coach Betty took a sabbatical this year said the turning point for his team came In their final regular season game showdown with twotime defending champs Acton Redmen The Rebels needed to win that game by at least Ave points to get first place and won the contest We knew that would be THE game said After that I t think anyone was going to catch We were over the hump and knew we belonged This has been a totally enjoyable year for me I so satisfied wllh the girls improvement They worked so hard and never questioned me and the things I had them do There were times when I got some weird looks but I told Ihem to trust me and they did The thing I noticed about this team was their unselflghness and balanced This year they became a together team I wish I could blueprint this to show the other teams I coach also we re fortunate to have such good feeder schools The girls coming in have a good Idea about the game ThejuiuorscniadwlUlosefcwofflveiurtenBurroughsreturns but all five second team players return along with three others In all seven of the nine returnees will be in Grade 10 next year By DAN RALPH HeraM Sports Editor A shorthanded Georgetown Chrysler Raiders team had its four game win streak broken Saturday in Cambridge Missing five regulars the Raiders were on the short end of a 32 decision However if there was a silver lining to the loss It was the play of netminder Mauro Team captain Tom Gibson played in Flint of the International League this weekend while Elliott and Craig Frank sat out the second game of their twogame suspensions Leo had work commitments while Jin File had an exam to write In his correspondence Course Dllillo whb has been with the Raiders just two weeks made several saving stops for Georgetown In the first period to keep the game scoreless In fact beading into the final period Cambridge could only cling to a lQ lead But for their part the Raiders never got going until the third period Georgetown had shots on Terry Thompson but only two Were from in dose After Cambridge went ahead Ben and Larry Power lifted Georgetown to a 22 deadlock In the latter stages of the period the Raiders came on but the Hornet goalie robbed Bruce Kinsman with little over four minutes left Raider Paul Gallagher also came close but his shot went off the goal post The Hornets got the goahead goat on a power play with a little over three minutes to play Doug Fry was called forhooking which with Raiders coachgeneral manager Gil It was a chlnsy penalty he said Its disappointing because we had them on the run Friday the Raiders defeated Chat ham in a game that started over an hour late Georgetown started out slowly but caught fire in the second period and put good pressure on the Had it not been for some good saves from Chatham LesGcrrod the score could easily nave been higher than the It was heading Into the frame Both dubs had a pair of tallies in the third period Eyre said just because Chatham has won but one game this year t necessarily mean the are an easy foe When we were up there lost we had a tough game We won but we had two empty net goal and in the third period Chatham led us It was a tough game Eyre also said the delay hurt his club in the early going The guys rush to the rink get dressed then have to all he said Yeah it did affect us Gary McFadyen had two goals for the Raiders while Ben Gallagher and Power had singles at the Alcott Arena and will travel t for a Friday night contest there Chapman left days game after the second period He went to the hospital for at least 10 Joe Panniccia made a fine play in Fridays game that kept Chatham off the Panniccia redirected a Pontlacs shot that was heading into an open Raiders net Pat was signed this week but has decided not to play Last year also expressed an Interest in playing In Georgetown but then against It Colllngwood Shipbuilders cancelled their two week end games in and Chatham this weekend They didn have enough players A decision will be made as to what to do with the two games in the final standings Dllillo father and sister were at Friday game to see him play Mauro was on the bench as Dave Tataryn handled the chores Friday night Tataryn was as vocal Friday night as he ever been and It almost resulted In an icing call going the Raiders way Ray had tried to pass the puck to the point but his pais went all the way into Georgetown territory past the icing line Tatarynyellediclng
