HERALD Wednesday December IKS Page Cross EDITORS NOTE This week begins the start of Mr Peikeri column on crosscountry skiing Throughout the next weeks Mr Peaker will deal with many aspects or the sport which will be featured In this section of the Bauer Many people have asked me should I buy no wax skit or regular skis that require waxing My answer is yes and no Let me qualify my answer For young children aged yean skis or those with fish scales are Ideal to start They require no waxing thus saving adults the consuming task of wax application The youngsters can put on the skis any time and are assured will be no slipping back on the snow Young skiers don have the pati ence or lime to worry about such details as waxing They want to ski Instantly without Waxless skis give them this benefit As far as older children and middleaged adults are concerned I do not recommend for lie following reasons they Inhibit the ability to glide both on theflatsanddownhlll Also on hard packed and icy surfaces they do not provide the necessary grip for proper kick If you plan on entering tours and are Intent on Improving your technique I recommend regular touring skis that waxing I the past the only rule of thunjb used in fitting skis was the tips should come up to your wrist whin your arm is extended over yon head The wrist measurement is only a starting point In rllty filling skis has more to do win weight than arm reach Its fetter to have a ski with the right than to worry about the length Let me explain The camber refers to the arc in the skis just under the foot area- and is a very Important factor Too much j camber in relation your weight results in the difficulty In weight lug down or flattening the ski against the snow It would be difficult to attain a proper kick and you would constantly be sliding backwards Too little camber would mean that a poor glide Is probable as the kicking area would be flat against the snow even on downhills In order to find the proper camber place the skis that you want to test on the floor Place a piece of paper under the foot area Stand on both skis with equal weight distribution Have someone else move the paper back and forth If it moves freely that means that the midsections of the skis are not riding on the snow and holding you back Now put all your weight on one ski and try to remove the paper If the paper slips out easily you have too much camber Find a pair that wont let the paper budge when all your weight Is on one ski As far as length Is concerned men or women to tall should be using cm skis 57 to use The are strictly for very tall or very skilled skiers Men or women about tall should buy get and and taller get Be cautioned again on what type of skis you are buying Metaledged skis are used for downhill skiing at ski lift areas and ley back country skiing Wide side cut skis are too wide for use on machine groomed tracks Youve heard of Star Wars now come Ski Wars As I write this column technology Is progress at a faster rate than anyone could have imagined Almost daily there are new breakthroughs in skis boots binding systems poles etc Every manufacturer wants to achieve a first in any one or all of the aforementioned areas The crosscountry boom has even forced downhill ski manufacturers to look at the lucrative crosscountry ski market We are no longer being treated as second class citizens who ski on barrel staves Our numbers are growing every year and that spells profits large profits for those companies who can launch new innovative equipment and ideas before their competition We should welcome this trend with open arms because it means improved ski Custom homes prices CLASSIC CEDAR HOMES BOX 283 ONTARIO N0B1Z0 Name Street City Phone Location Acton Sabres split Junior C
