Day in life Knight chairs environment committee By Douglai Armour Queen Bureau TORONTO Soon after entering the arena of provincial politics life for Don Knight became an uphill exhlleratlng exper ience Mr Knight taking up liberal banner after former MPP Julian Reed stepped down and he soon found himself away in the changing tide of the May election and the May signing of the Liberal accord which brought his party back Into power after a vear absence It was only In ones wildest dreams that one speculated on the possibility that we might have to form the government said Mr Knight during a recent Interview in his fourth floor Queens Park office Immediately after the signing of the accord Mr Knight found himself carried away with the committees hearings and meetings that form part of his responsibilities as a Liberal backbencher During the summer months he sat with other MPPs on the Select Committee on Economic Affairs and travelled to Washington as part of the committees research wasnt until Knight and his wife Linda took a twoweek break away from politics during the summer that he was able to sit back and say Hey Im really an MPP Joked Mr Knight Although the excitement of being elected and helping to form the 33rd parliament has levelled off the 43year old former Insurance brokers heavy involvement with government affairs and representing his constituency cont inues unabated On an average day Mr Knight arrives from his Milton home about a at Queens Park from his Milton home at 9 a consults his staff and then attends committee or caucus meetings or tries to catch up on the continuous flow of correspondence with constituents government or other MPPs During afternoons he attends question period or works on the volumes of information and reports which comes from the economic environment or justice committees he Is involved with Mr Knight also sits regularly attends evening sessions at Queens Park when the House sits late to debate bills or emergency issues When not at Queens Mr Knight can be found In his Hal ton- Burl constituency office or attending public functions and generally keeping In touch with his constituents With the Increase In responsibiliti es and the Increased demand on his lime and energy Mr Knight says he has to try hard to remain accessible to his constituents and remain the ordinary Don Knight that I was before I was elected After four years in Milton munici pal politics during which time he was also busy with his own Insurance business Knight finds that working full time as an MPP is easier in keeping in contact with his constituen cy Being able to drive dally from Milton to Queens Park also helps to maximize contact with constituents and their concerns Its still politics said Knight of the difference between politics at the provincial and municipal level And politics is serving your constituents The concerns are the same but now they are oriented Generally speaking Knights long- term concerns are environmental including toxic waste disposal acid rain gravel extraction and the retent ion He is chairman of tho House Environment Committee His short term concerns which he defined as problems that are immcdlatloy solvable include youth unemployment electa rial boundary changes woer treatment and health care services particularly In the Georgetown- Acton area The Health Care Centre anil its need for additional funds to finance chronic health care beds issue Mr Knight will continue to emphasize in on going talks with Health minister Murray Mr Knight is also making his concerns about planned elector boundary redistribution known in House debates Ensuring that a community of interest Is maintained in any boundary changes Knight argues that the northern part his region should be divided by a line across Road making north of that road a new riding Under the present proposal Hal- Ion Burlington would be divided by a line running north and south making Ha Hon two ridings But Mr Knight wants to ensure that in addition to keeping riding populations across the province equal to their political repre sentation common interests and con also form the basis of any future tectorial boundary changes If Is then redistribution should be done so that northern area slays together because they do have a community of interest Mr Knlghtsfutureplans arc clear and simple electorate willing he hopes to match Reeds ten year period as Hal ton Burlington and simply to do what I need to do to ensure that the profile of my riding is enhanced and increased TDK HERALD January IS IKS
