Georgetown there t a minor hockey association present Much of what Goldham learned came as the result of trial by error I dont think I learned the technical parts of hockey until after I turned pro Goldham said We did get a certain amount of coaching but not to the extent or what kids get now Its for that reason Goldham looks favorably lo the formation of a minor hockey association Goldham says young players now have of i advantage than he did In the 1930 Kids v have a definite age in terms coaching if they choose to accept it Goldham said Their advantage now is theyre learning all the basics wo took for granted It association In the 30 would have helped it a lot easier to learn from someone else mistake rather than by the hard way But still sees some benefits from having learned hockey in his day With all the coaching the kids get maybe theyre ait clones Maybe they do everything the same What we did learn by ourselves by playing shinny was how to skate and puck handle this coaching but they don get the chance to develop Many bright spots in two puck losses Dy DAVIDSON Herald When you lose twice as the minor novices did over the past week its hard to express positive reporting but as I sat to write several bright spots came to mind in Georgetown the Hockey Moms met first place Brampton The usual outcome la a very high score for Brampton but our neighbors from Brampton were in for a surprise Brampton scored first just Into the first period but twenty seven seconds later Scott beautifully set by David Kotsos scored to tie Still tied and going Into the second the play was very close but again picture perfect skating and puck passing from David lo Scott produced the go ahead marker Then the line of Tim Dlardlchuk Brad Spears shot up the ice passed to Robbie who made no mistake and sent the red and Bantams hang tough The A Johnson and Associates Bantam lis have saved their best hockey of the season for the playoffs against Milton They find themselves down in a best of five series but could easily have been up with a little bit of luck Game One was a hard fought victory for Georgetown In the first period on a Glen Mulder got the draw back to Jay Johnston who rifled one in along the ice Inthesecond period Milton tied the score but a minute later Jeremy put the black and white ahead when got the draw back to him and he blasted it in from the blue line for another marker At 11 of the final frame Milton again tied the score to set up a dramatic win With the clock ticking away Mulder took the puck behind the Milton net and passed in front to Rob Cook who beat the goalie with only two seconds left Ted also assisted on this play Game Two Alcott was a loss to Milton The locals Just couldnt cash in on their opportunities but did manage to keep the score low Game Three was another hard fought contest Milton took an early lead before stole the puck and beat the lo tie the gome Georgetown went ahead when Kirk beat goalie cleanly on a pass from Milton came on with the next three goals to With less than a minute left Georgetowns goalie was lifted In favor of another attacker and Ihc strategy paid off With seconds left Chris McCarthy and David Gardner set up Mulder to close the gap The black and white pressed but could not net the equalizer The team has played excellent hockey in this series and John Stefan have been exceptionally sharp black two ahead Bramptons coach ignited his bench and with a few errors on Georgetown part they soon capita I iz tying then planting the go goal The third period saw George town press hard with a goal from Tim Diardlchuk from Robbie and Brad Spears but as luck would have it the final was far Brampton The bright spots In this defeat nice passing plays from two super lines and Robbies first goal Sunday the red and black headed or Coach Barry Mills had his job cut out for him as placing last in the league left the Hockey Moms flat his scouting reporis stated Ching hod Improved George town came out flying with David Kotsos and Scott applying pressure fast with several near misses but none would go In Whether it was frustration or something else George town flattened going through the motions but thats all Ching give them credit is a vast improved club took quick advantage and soon led 40 It looked like Ching first win of the season was going to be a shutout but David never give up attitude assisted by David Bocre Scott spoiled that Final score Bright spots after the game I asked two players how they fell they had both played and had fun doing it winning or losing didnt seem to enter Into it much since we are just ending minor hockey week when I reflect on this I guess that s what minor hockey is all about having fun and enjoying this great sport The minor novice are off to Newmarket Friday Saturday and Sunday so good luck in their second tournament challenge Mustangs increase advantage Mustangs opened a twogame advantage over second spot Cougars by virtue of a 62 win in Georgetown Ladies Basketball League play The win over Cougars gave the Mustangs an record while Trojans dropped to Anita had 18 points for the winners while Sue Tesar had points and Lorraine Brown chipped In with Chung Kim led Cougars wilh 18 points while Dlaga and Sua Cock burn both had 12 points In the other game Kerry had points as Coprlcorns defeat Trojans Joanne and Marie Smith both chipped in wilh points For Trojans Janet MacKay had points white Jane Power had 17 points North team dominant in 110 win Georgetowns North Sports major novices thoroughly dominated Brampton Thursday at Memorial Arena when Ihey skated to an cosy 11Owln Goalies Jeff Whorley and Steve were called on to make only three saves In recording the win Strong positional play and crisp pass ing led to the big offensive output by the locals Doug Sheppard led the scoring four goals and an assist Olher scorers were Mark with two and singles went to Cory Evans Joe Stephens Duane Efler Blaine McCauley and Gavin Glaser Stephenson Stephen David and all had FREEZER FRENZY Open 7 Days 8530101 5 Ml St ACTON In Sunday went all the way In recording the shutout as the locals registered a win It took the Georgetown team a period and a half to get on track In the last two minutes of the second scored two while McCauley and Stephenson added singles Assists went to Wilkinson and Stephens Georgetown thoroughly dominated the final frame as McCauley and laser scored with Stephenson and earning assists This week the locals play two big games against rival Milton and snath against strong Creek BARRY Playing The Field their individual skills he said Goldham who played on five Stanley Cup winners during his pro career with Toronto Maple Leafs Chicago Black Hawks and Detroit Red Wings said coaches should aim at keeping the game fun Goldham said that worked for him as a pro in Detroit We used lo look forward to the minute scrimmage after practice for the beer he said If you have an hour practice give minutes for fundamentals and leave the last 15 minutes for a scrimmage You find the kids will look forward to the end of the practice Even when It comes to coaching said setting ones sights on play in the defensive zone will benefit the players more than concentrating on play in the offensive zone If kids get good coaching In their own tone theyve got it made All kids want to go for the offensive zone but that will develop on its own Its not what you do with the puck rather what you do without it Goldham said Goldham also said hockey is slowly coming around to the coaching philo sophies that have been part of other sports for quite a long time You look al baseball and football and they vc had a lot coaches he said think hockey is the slowest sport in developing coaching the player is doing wrong he might never gil a chance to tell the player because the lime he has he might forget With two coaches one can tell the player what he did wrong as soon as he comes off Ihc Ice said I think when children are and years old thats the time to start developing them Up to that time theyll develop themselves into where they want to go If a guy knows what hes cut out to be he
