the HERALD Suggestions of games within games Home Newspaper of Halton Hills Established 1866 A Division of Canadian Newspapers Company Limited Guelph Street Georgetown 3Z6 Ontario GARNET COWSILL Publisher and General Manager J STEVEN FOREMAN Advertising Manager 877 2201 Ml Page SECTION A THE HERALD Wednes October IS Tough times It a tough time to be a teenager It s unrealistic to believe every young adult can cope with life when their walls seem to collapse all around them There s an appalling lack of services for teens in north Halton Teens that need help in Halton Hills being given the care they deserve It s not the fault of our health care providers already in place They re doing a fine job But there are more services that can be offered to our young adults Two examples For one there is a large gap in mental health services for Halton children especially north Halton s children There is a Burlington Children s Assess and Treatment Centre but they are underfunded and have a waiting list Two years ago and since provincial grants have been turned down for treatment centre offices in Acton Georgetown and Milton Secondly a Drug Abuse Committee was formed in to help disuade children from using drugs and to help those who had drug problems Although is improving their ser vices there is so much more this hard working group wants to do Foremost on the mtnds of committee members is a drug rehabilitation centre in Previously they have sent addicts to a treatment centre in North Bay for rehabilitation Another program they wish to carry out is a follow up program to help support former addicts recently released from drug treatment centres If you think these types of programs won t help think of the vandalism in your community Imagine a family member or relation who is coping with mental health or drug addiction problems Think for a moment what it would be like if treatment facilities were overcrowded or there was a long waiting list or there was nothing at all available What can be done We have three suggestions Support the work of by joining them Oct for their March Against Drug Abuse The walk leaves from Burger King in Georgetown between 9 10 a m A new committee of concerned parents are sponsoring a public meeting Oct to talk about the need for additional services for youths and teens with mental health pro blems It starts at m at Bishop Reding High School formerly Speyside P S Lastly consider a donation to the United Way North requires more social services many of them will benefit teens directly A successful United Way will help to fund the agencies lacking in funds If you want to help you can It s a matter of getting in volved in your community Survey support There s good news and bad news for art lovers as revealed through a recently published survey The Halton Hills Arts Council study is a valuable docu ment outlining many positive directions the Council can take in the future Indeed there are many opportunities for arts people to exploit that the good news Respondents felt there should be more concerts per cent and more arts and entertainment in parks 42 per cent People felt that arts and entertainment adds to our community by development of homegrown talent per cent Other positive news is that local theatre is a top for residents followed by live music and original crafts respectively The cold hard truth hurts however Less than 20 per cent of the respondents knew about Arts CouncU services and had never utilized any of them The study shows here that a more visible Arts Council is required to promote the good work they are doing in the community voluntarily we might add Blacks beautiful in your hometown TORONTO A matter o Or Just a man who sow his chance and took IP New Democrat David Ramsay a farmer from the town area of northeastern Ontario has crossed Ihe floor of the legislature It Is a venerable tradition signal a switch In allegiance by a member of the legislative from one party to another Ramsay has joined the Liberals Why he did it Is the obvious ques tion In press reports reaching here Ramsay announced the switch from his riding Ramsay made three points One is that he could do mort for the riding on the government side of the Assembly The second is that his presence in the Liberal caucus would strengthen northern representation on the Grit benches where currently the only sitting member from north of the French River is the interest battered Rene Fontaine Third he been Impressed by the Liberal commitment to the North But that is too easy It is hard to believe Ramsay a Queens Park lly Derek Nelson newcomer In the 1885 election would have crossed the floor if he I thought the Liberals were going to win the next provincial election It is only eight months away Cynics around Queen Park believe Ramsay has been bought and paid for meaning he has been promised a cabinet seat he crossed the floor to help shore up the Grits weak northern flank The suggestion Is that he could be made northern development minister when Premier David Peterson shuffles his cabinet In January Ramsay denies he has been pro mised anything In fact some Liberals here hint Ramsay may be rejected by the Grit caucus There are suggestions of games within games here Still there Is little doubt that Ram the Liberals although not ly to cross the floor Conservative leader Larry Grossman said the contact man in Ramsay case was Education Minister Sean Conway This is all fair politics From those who know Ramsay and from what he has said and done around here It Is clear he is one of those on the ideological wing of FIRST THE m LEAVING his now former party He ll have no trouble fitting in with the Liberals unless they don t cept him of course although Ram say thinks they already have done so Besides the lure of cabinet and Its power with the fawning staff the Ilmoslnes and all is strong When they were in opposition the Grits believed every floorcrossing and retirement In the past 10 years four come to mind was or chestrated by the then Conservative government The objective then was either to have an incumbent who would run as a Tory or who would leave the seat vacant to give a Conservative the chance at It Or so the Liberals said Designated spokesman for the Liberals on the day Ramsay moved was Environment Minister Jim Bradley who was all halo and In noccncc Hes unaware of approaches by any New Democrats which tells you only that no one has passed the word to Bradley But why believe him any more than he used to believe the Corner va lives Ramsay should have one worry The recent track record of floor crossers t been good Both from Liberal to Conservative have been beaten at the next election Staff comment Ah black must be a popular color this season Even more popular looks to be black on black I say this because as I look out the Herald window I see yet another Georgetown District High School student strolling downtown swathed inlayersof black To see this in Georgetown takes getting used to You have to admit its not a common sight In a com where baseball caps and T Growing up In Toronto I used to see a lot of this black on black look They were the Italian and Por tuguese grandma who once their partner in life pass ed away would dedicate themselves to an all black wardrobe to honor the dead In many European and African village women are to black after the death of a loved one A depressing certainly slimming prospect for the bereaved Ask any woman how to low five pounds instantly and she tell you wear black The only one it Citizens forum Keep donations in town In your opinion fool unfortunately Is my mother As Georgetown many re cent immigrants compared to the more International Toronto it a bit of a shock to the eye to see a black swathed figure on Street and another shock to recognize a fresh young face hidden under the black wraps So what up What happened to the love of the young for the glitzy eyecatching shiny and shimmering fabrics Why are they into black all black now asked GDHS student services teacher Mavis ONell She says perhaps 30 out of the students at the high school are into all black that snot really that many She says its the heavy metal bands bands like Helix White Snake Ozzie Osborne David Lee Roth and Black Sabbath whose members wear a lot of leather and black that are Influencing the dress of some students Not to despair She says the all black look Isn going to over the student population If anything students dress Is more dressy over the last couple of TAN years especially with the girls probably Mrs 0 Nell says A few years ago because we rarely girls in a It was different and to do So the next time your kid asks you whatever you for some money to go clothes want with your and wear lection first Then you wont be In whatever you for any surprises Dears The Red Cross Is now a partner In the recently established United Way of II lis You will no longer have a Bed Cross volunteer
