Teachers Association worked on a little strategy about spending or education dollars In Ha I Ion During a workshop held in Burl Jan 9 the group looked at Issues such as class size the number of consultative staff and Inslruc tionnl material surrounding elementary schools and plans were developed to influence the Hall on Board or Education budget We looked at our concerns said president Roberts and we looked al some strategies to influence the board budget The group plans to send a delega Hon to the March 10 school board meeting The budget for the next school year will be debated and passed March In Hal ton class sites which average for Grades one through eight are still among the highest in the province the president said Of the 19 boards which compares itself with this region is second highest in terms of class size he said For example the Windsor Region averages students per class In Grades one through eight The ideal the aiming for in the long run would be students class in Grades one to three Grades four to six and in Grides seven and eight Mr Roberts said wants the board to address the gap of fund allotment to clem en tjiry and secondary students In the budget elementary schools received approximately less per pupil than the secondary schools Mr Roberts said In the 1967 budget his amount rose to an ap proximate difference of bet ween elementary and secondary students We constantly sec this gap in crease the president said The group has not seen the local board address the issue Realistically Mr Roberts knows the gap can not be evened out all at Six euchre tables euchre members had six tables active last Thursday The winners were Ethel Webb Presswood Phil Lan dry and George Burt Fred Workman won lone hands while Mae Tost was the lucky draw win once but he said per tary student would go a long way to reducing class size Just wonts the board to lake a look at the budget and find ways to increase the amount of dollars elementary schools receive The March delegation will be an at tempt to have the board address issues critical to the quality of education Mr Roberts sold Georgetown school trustee Dick said the Board of Education Is working towards Inging down the studentteacher ratio and thus reduce class sizes But he added the board only has number of dollars In the pot and has to determine the best way to spend it The budget which will be finalized March deals with everything but teachers salaries the trustee said The board has to determine how much will be spent on books and pen ells as well as how much the various programs will cost to operate The board receives grants from the province based on the number of students enrolled within COURTMATES Tralllc Specialist Worried about high coat Insurance and tow of the amount it receives for tary and secondary students since the rate Is set by the province The provincial government always gives more for high school students than elementary students Mr said basically because It is more expensive to educate a high school student On the issue of class sire Mr said It would be really nice if the average of children could be slotted Into each classroom In practice Is docs not work he said Each school Is assigned a cer number of teachers based on the pupilteacher ratio The principal is in charge dividing classes as best he can For example if a principal
