Citizens forum Seniors study changed Dear Sir I read with disappointment the short article on the Seniors task force changes it mandate The intent of the task force wu to study the feasibility of a Seniors Centre and to poll the seniors on the type of services they would like to see offered Lew Ward made a strong case for a separate Seniors Centre and It was agreed at the time that a study be made to this effect Who is it that convinced the powers that be to change their minds Why was study shifted and on the project I feel that there are many seniors who would not agree with this change If they realized what was going on Other committees have completed a feasibility study of the type Initial ly recommended and found it ex tremely helpful Perhaps someone can enlighten your readers as to what Is very truly Moore Park Crescent Term stranger confusing Dear Sir Dont talk to strangers is a com man warning given to children by parents concerned for the personal safety of their children Although well Intended the warning ignores everything known about those who commit sexual crimes against children and If anything leaves the child more vulnerable to exploits The term stranger is confusing to a child and misleads the child into believing that be or she should only be cautious of people who have an unusual or slovenly appearance The truth of course Is that It Is Impossl ble to know a child molester by ap pearance They come from all walks of life many of them even In posi tions of trust with children Research has also shown that over BO per cent of all crimes against children are committed by someone known to the child not by someone the child would consider to be a stranger Creating undue fear the child mind of strangers then leaves the child open to assault by someone the child knows and trusts When speaking to children about personal safety It Is more ap propriate to teach them how to res pond to certain situations rather than giving them a particular profile or image of a stranger Research has also shown that those who prey upon Innocent children use only a limited number of lures to attract their prey Children can easily be taught these lures and how to res pond should they be approached Crimes against innocent children will not be prevented by the games gadgets gimmicks finger print kits or tear generating literature that is becoming too com on the market today They can be prevented through common sense educational programs In school and In home For free information on the prevention of crimes against children or on how to establish a
