public and store owner Ruth Wilson la ecstatic The small store on Guelph Street specializes in bedroom furniture and other accessories Including Irish handmade crystal and Irish table napkins straight from County Tyrone Ms Wilsons old home in northern Ireland Although Ms Wilson claims that this is her first attempt at storting her own business she Is not without experience Ms Wilson has worked or several retail In the and Mlsslssauga area upon her arrival In Canada six-and- ahalf years ago and It was from this experience thai Ms Wilsons decision to open up her own business originated Theres not much point in making money for others when you can make It tor yourself Ms Wilson points out malleroffactly It is quite obvious that Ms Wilson duels that takes a lot of pride in her work and enjoys the Idea of being her own What makes her store unique from all the others Many of the products on display have been brought over from Ireland by her husband Bert who has been back to visit County Tyrone seven times since his departure Apart from this the store Is in many ways unique itself It has been beautifully and creatively decorated by Ms Wilson and her husband who are both dedicated in making the store a success Ms Wilson does not seem to be too concerned at the mo ment with surrounding competition as she doesnt feel that there arc very many stores in Georgetown which specialize In the same type of products as hers Having been open for approx imately two months now Ms Wilson a shop has already proven successful as there seems to be a large demand for the various Fair 88 for her project on in sulation Framework defined for Sunday shopping The Honourable Joan Smith Solicitor General for the Province of Ontario announced on April 14 that a provincial framework to regulate retail shopping on Sundays and holidays would be retained when amendments to the Retail Business Holidays Amendment Act were In troduced The Solicitor General also an nounced that In keeping with the diverse nature of the municipalities would have their powers of decision over retail hours expanded through the right to enact bylaws to adapt the provincial framework to their local values The amendments to be Introduced will provide municipalities with the right to enact Sunday bylaws lo open additional businesses or to close businesses The new law is part of an Ontario tradition of local decision making Communities already have the power lo regulate store hours throughout the week Sunday sports and liquor availability have both been matters of loco decision mak ing Many communities have exer cised their existing option to designate tourist areas and as a result have extensive shopping on Sundays and holidays In order to protect employees possibly affected by Sunday retail hours the Minister of Labour will be Introducing amendments to the Employment Standards Act to create new protection fur retail workers The new legislation will provide protection to all retail employees In business establishments that open on Sunday to ensure a coherent and fair ap plication of the low throughout the re to Usee tor Some of the larger volume retail outlets have found that the current law could be ignored because the maximum fine was only In an effort to provide an effective deterrent to breaking the proposed legislation the maximum fine has now been set The Retail Business Holidays Act has been In force since 1976 The government has now put forward much needed amendments to pre vent the abuses and unfairness which have become such a contention under the current
