employers said student placement officer Angela Ms is a fourth- year sociology student at Queens University Students come in register and check the job boards If they see something they are Interested In they are screened Often employers who give a job order have specific requirements they need filled such as education special Interests or work boots If they meet the requirements the students are referred to the employer and it is up to the student to arrange an interview time The placement officers like lo refer at least three people to employers to give Ihem more op tions Working through the Student Employment Centre saves employers time said Ms Buskard They ore not bombarded with students who may or may not fit the job as is sometimes the case when they place ads in newspapers In 19B7 approximately students registered with the centre white about students found placements When students come in Ms Buskard said they are encouraged to not only use the centres services to set a job but to also use resources such as friends relatives and newspaper ads As well as helping to find students jobs the two placement officers also counsel students on Job search techniques Students may come In with no idea of what they want said Ms Buskard We try and determine what kind of employment they want and focus them They help with their resumes and gone out to on Interview before said Karen Coats who is headed for London University of Western On In the fall to attend teachers college Job prospects far students are high this year In general I would be quite optimistic about it said Ms At the moment there are mostly restaurant and general labor jobs on the board There are also a number of careeroriented jobs which are government subsidized aimed for post secondary students Summer jobs help students extra money for school travel or just giyes them extra spending money It also gives them experience in heir chosen field or just the work world It gives them an Idea of what they want to do in university Ms Coats said or It may work the other way and show the students what they may not want to do To prepare themselves for a sum job search Ms Buskard students start early They should keep a positive at tllude and be prepared to apply to many places not just one she said Students should also be persistent and not wait for the employer to phone them Placement officers will be lo
