of Ihe day Flicks Fishermen should always trust womens intuition icma Landry Whoa Rita shouted Stop the boat No go back about ten feet Yes slop right here please There a big fish right here I can telll My wife certainly seemed to be caught up In the excitement of our fishing trip but I must admit that I was skeptical about this particular spot She had chosen a location In the middle of West Lake a good distance away from the rocky shoals and shallow bays I wanted to try However as they say Ladles first and I was delighted to see her paving such a good lime What should I put on my line Rita asked Black Fury I suggested Tipped with a worm I added Ugh Could you put the worm on for me please I happily compiled grabbing healthiest Juiciest specimen I could find In Ihe bait box Squlrmier Ihe better look at this guy move He ought to catch something worthwhile maybe a nice walleye Poor worm ugh I was all Rita could say then she tossed her adorn little spinner out Into the murky water and it quickly disappeared in the dark depths Meanwhile I pro ceeded lo hook up a similar contrap tion heaved It out and then sat back to relax and enjoy the pretty round A couple of minutes passed I got weeds Rita said MMPH heavy weeds I caught on bottom I grabbed Rita rod gave It a firm pull and felt confident that she was about o pull up a healthy clump of partially submerged weeds or a branch or something Salad Just salad I said know It certainly be a fish because there was absolutely no fight lo II and Rita be drag ring bottom because I always fish deeper and my line was as inactive as a Toronto Maple Leaf power play Len I reel It you keep on fishing Rita said as she struggled catch Now West Lake Is like a large shallow bowl with a collection of beach sand at one end also known as the Sandbanks Provincial Park The opposite end Is famous for its prop- busting shoals weedy bays and big pise The lake Is located on this sloe of and Is connected by a channel to Lake Ontario Its water Is very heavily stained dishwater we call It and is very fertile It Is home to a multitude of spedes such as walleye bass carp catfish perch eel oc casional muskle and of course the great Northern pike You name ft and West Lake probably has It II Is a generally shallow body of water with the weeds becoming so thick at times that boat travel becomes dlf Pish this lake in May and June then again In September and October for best results Use lures with a lot of flash and wobble and tip them wllh live bait where ap- Save gas by letting your drift through the weed beds and along shoals There is usually enough of a breeze to accomplish this but have respect for Ibis lake high winds can come up very sud denly from adjoining Lake Ontario and what seems like a LI tie haven In Heaven can be quickly transformed Into a wavecrashing nightmare Until this particular day I had never tried the middle of the lake and Instead I d concentrated on the bays and shoals I estimated that we were In about twenty feet of water deep for this lake with a soft muddy and weedy bottom My line was just touching Ihe occasional weed Up and dragg log through soft muck Rita continued to pull on the weighty load on the end of her line remember offering her some assistance then I spoiled the shadowy form of what she was about to haul to The dark murky water allowed only a glimpse of a large outline which grew ell tale pale spots and a huge head ac quiring the unmlstakeabie form of a big big pike You know how they say thai big fish are different that they don t strike In the normal way that they fight at first like the prover log Weil here was further evidence for the truth of that state ment Huge fish also don t get that way by being stupid this was so relaxed at this point In the battle that a pair of headphones and sunglasses would have been ap propriate attire for Rita stilt seen the fish and as I fumbled for the net I told her to stay calm Hold on dear hold on because you ve hooked Ihe big pike I ever seen Just stay Me I was shaking Well Doctor Kerby and Doctor Markham would have been proud of Ihe way that pike opened up wide as It came closer long teeth shining no cavities for sure and this huge mouth was the first thing Rita saw my God Rita threw the rod down at least it stayed In the boat the fish turn ed broke the line easily then it was gone It even worked up a For a few minutes there was Just silence apart from the gentle lapp ing of the waves against the aluminum boat I m sorry Len I thought it was an alligator Don worry I replied This net t have handled that fish anywa Nope that was a trig Nor thern twenty five maybe thirty pounds who knows And you picked the spot Rita Talk about intuition To demonstrate the species I later landed a nice little flvepount pike and told Rita to have a look at what she had hooked earlier That not the same as my she objected Its so well you know Yeah It so small we sold In unison and then we laughed as the curtain came down on another crazy but true fishing tale I guess the moral of the story Is that there ore when one should never doubt a woman Intuition If she tells you there s a big fish underneath your boat stop throw the marker buoy boy and start casting Another example and the most Important demonstration of this female extra sense has nothing at all to do with fishing and that when your wife looks you straight in ihe eyes and says calmly Honey I think the baby coming The Ace 138 JV Shops buttle by scoring the go ahead touchdown on the last three plays of the game defeating them 1813 Lett Dive had an
